So, I have been on linked in for a few years. I have had sweet F.A. of any use from it. My email box is constantly being hammered with emails telling me that people have accepted my invitation (which I did not send in the first place), and loads of requests for connections from people that I have never heard of, and have no connection (out-with Linkedin). So for me, it is a real hassle with no worth. Is anyone getting anything positive from it? Maybe I am not using it correctly? I am very close to deleting my account from it. Facebook and SE have been far better for networking and finding new business for me.

Would be interested to hear others' thoughts on Linked recently.

I use it daily. I use it for corporate escalations, researching companies I wanted to work for, companies I plan on doing business with, candidates I am interviewing, people I am scheduled to meet (int & ext) etc.

Two weeks ago a UK distributor of a product upped their pricing on a specialised product. I was not happy so got in touch with the CEO of the company in the US. A week later he had his team put on a webex for me detailing the value add etc. all of which I was not getting from my distributor. In fact they are coming over soon and I will be meeting up with them. I did not avoid the spend but I negotiated it down ("thats not what Bob in the US told me.." certainly got his attention) and also got them to work harder for it to ensure I was getting all the value adds which they could not be bothered doing.

I also use the Groups for tech discussions and for recommendations of companies, tech and also to discuss issues and approaches.

All in all an essential tool, would I have bought it for $19b though ? :-o

Last week a "recruitment consultant" phoned me at work and that pissed me off. other than that I have had little hassle. I use it to nosey a little bit at our competitors and I did a little trolling last week

I think you are unlucky, Dom...it does just what it says on the tin for me and I've never had a connection set up that I didn't ask for or accept. Hmm.

I know our reception is getting a lot of unsolicited calls looking for me from recruitment consultants and my Linkedin "stats" are pretty high so guess they are harvesting it pretty hard.

Yeah should be banned for trolling by recruitment companies, I have at least two a week on my view status.

However, reception know not to put them through, and thankfully my new title is quite vague, so doesn't attract the recruiters.

Agree in general though, a useful tool for research and corporate schmoozing....

It's also a neat way of staying in touch with people even when their mobile or emails are changing etc.

I use it two fold......

1) to promote myself - I have been approached twice with solid offers ( and to be fair some dross offers too..)

2) to go looking for contractors that I need for my team

If you make an effort to populate it well it can pay huge dividends. I also use it to connect with others things that interest me such as Sports Marketing, Mountain Biking etc etc. It has also proven to be handy for getting VIP passes.

I see Sanjoy's stuff quite a bit. If you dont post naff stuff then people tend to drift onto your profile periodically.

Cheers, Cal

A timely reminder, in fact

LinkedIn is playing a rather big role in my business connections right now.

Definitely not to be underestimated.
