SE book club
Re: SE book club
Shame about his health and all, but something I've found really off in many of his more recent books is the way he insists on shoe-horning in his soft-porn fantasies. If I want porn, I know where to find it - gives me the creeps being force-fed it by a 60 yo.

Re: SE book club
Time to bring this post bttt seeing as its summer holiday time. Is the new Dan Brown any good? By that I mean I know he gets a hard time from critics, but it's that sort of easy, poolside read I am looking for. I finally got round to reading the first Steig Larsson book having managed to avoid the films and enjoyed that, so it's that kind of thing. Any other new books to recommend?

Read the rest of the Larsen books, better than the films. Quentin Jardine's "Bob Skinner" series of detective books are set around E Lothian and equal of Ian Rankin. For those who like Brookmyre, try Carl Hiassin <sp>, an American who's style is very similar.
On a more poignant note, I must read Ian Banks last book

I'm sure I'm not alone in my view that Mr Banks did a great job of combining several of my passions in "Raw Spirit" - Whisky, cars and, in his words, "Great Wee Roads". You'll likely be needing a dram when you read it.
Off in another direction, I've enjoyed the novels of Philip Kerr - start with Berlin Noir which evokes the atmosphere of pre-war Germany, and then follow the exploits of the main character, Bernie Gunther through about 6 other books. A suspension of belief is advisable, but the books are well researched and provide some interesting insights of the period from a largely German perspective.
