IoM visit.

Post by pete » Fri Apr 26, 2013 11:05 pm

Thinking of going to IoM for the TT this year.

I'm only going to go for the day so we'll need a rental, I don't suppose anyone has a link for anything tasty - can't find a thing on google, just swamped with ads.

(I've found a link for motorbike rental but I'd rather a decent car. And my pilot doesn't trust me on a bike. Yet I have to trust his driving. Hardly seems fair does it?)

Not exactly as billed, but all I could find:

My parents live in IoM and I took the Elise last visit, but probably wouldn't bother again. TT circuit road is fairly smooth and interesting but too busy for fun, and all the other roads are a bit too rough. Plus the island is small - you've pretty much done it in a day. If the weather is good then get a convertible and go with an expectation of touring rather than anything more urgent...

Last time we were across we were there for the entire week but booked a transit van (there were 14 of us on bike) for the rainy weather. Had a absolute blast chucking the guys round the back.

Only been 3 times in total but can ask around some of my bikers mates for good but unusual spectating spots.

Still in discussion. Mate's got a plane so we'll just fly over for the day (it's only an hour or so).

Are the roads open? Do they just close them for the actual races then re-open them or are they closed for the week?

They close the roads during the races but there is always usually a route in/out if you are infield (but it means you are restricted to view points as obviously you can't cross the racing circuit.

Hi Pete,

We'll be going over from the Friday of practice week to the Friday of race week. We stay in the south west so not that far to the airport. We should have transport of some description borrowed from my cousin who has a farm there (so it never smells that good and certainly won't be tasty) but could more than likely pick you both up and take you to a good spectating point assuming you are coming on a race day which are Saturday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Bear in mind the weather can delay or postpone races though so you'd want to check before you fly.

The roads are usually closed all day from early morning to after 6pm on race day but there are plenty of excellent spectating points you can go without crossing the course with some local knowledge. You can get from Ramsay all the way round to kirk Michael and everywhere between if you stay outside the circuit which is where the airport is. :thumbsup

There are some nice roads in the south too but none are well very smooth as has been said. It's only when you get back to the uk that you realise how bad the roads are over there. Not pot holed or anything just very rough/undulating.

Give me a shout if you want any info or help. I can't think of any rentals as I've never hired but I would imagine theyll be hard to come by. The population almost doubles at TT time.

That's awesome. The only day we can make is Tuesday (28th) though... Waste of time?

Yeh it's the following week that's race week and I'm not sure on the practise schedule.

Bugger. Minimal research, I just looked at a website that said 25th May - 7th June...
