Offshore Work - Help? (NLC)

I know there may already be a thread on this, but thought there are enough of you on here that can advise/help a good friend who is looking for work.

Gavin is qualified in Engineering systems (Electrical/Mechanical systems) and is looking for something offshore (possibly ROV technician/electrical technician) or a trainee position. He already has all of his offshore certificates.

Anyway, any help or guidance very much appreciated. Top lad, would highly recommend him to anyone, and would do very well.

If he has Electrical/Mechanical experience/qualifications then he has the ideal combo to transfer into ROVs. Must be plenty of companies out there looking. I'd tell him to Google ROV companies and send some CVs out. Oilcareers.com, Subsea 7, iTech, loads of ROV companies in Aberdeen, most likely always looking for people.

We were discussing offshore certs in the office just the other week and not convinced that this makes a huge difference if looking for permanent employment. Most companies have no problem putting candidates through this if they feel they are the one for the job. I have interviewed a few people recently and an offshore cert really wouldn't make any difference as to whether they got the job or not. I'd much rather go for someone I liked, had the right background and attitude over possession of a survival cert. No problem paying for that if they are right for the job.

Patience is the key - My BiL, a time served mechanic with pneumatics / LOLER experience has been trying to find offshore work for the past 7-8 months - Even completed his BOSIET / O&G Medical / MIST out his own pocket, which hasn't proved to be much of an advantage...

He's had barely a sniff of a job, and the one which did call (an agency), stated he'd need to relocate to ABZ for a workshop job for 12 months - And take an £8k wage cut. (Not ideal when you live 120 miles away, and have a mortgage / wife / 18 month old son...)

I know the above might sound negative, but he needs to be prepared for a potential wait - Your friend might have more luck, given his different skill set, and I hope he does.

Ping me a copy of his C.V, and I'll see if we've got anything suitable going

Agree with above, re timings.
Careful what you wish for though, most I know who have done it, do not want to go back. There are some exceptions and some who love it also, but I haven't met too many!

Agreed. A good friend of mine did BOSIET/MIST/medical last year, has applied for hundreds of jobs and companies, nothing. And this is with me working in the industry and asking around...wouldn't hesitate in recommending him as he has the right attitude and work ethic, but being a joiner doesn't have much to offer in transferrable skills

Disagree. I work offshore and the majority of my colleagues enjoy the variation in work and locations, and I feel the same

Personally didn't like ad hoc or missing things, I did fixed rotation which was better and there were other good bits but overall, I'm glad it's done.

I'm ad hoc and missing stuff can be a pain but I take holidays for important stuff, so no real issue

Agreed it's not everyone's cup of rosie, but diff'rent strokes etc
