Rough running

Post by jimbo » Sun Aug 11, 2013 8:53 am

Ok so I changed the plugs and leads on the S1, cause I got water into one of the spark plug chambers and it dropped that cylinder.

It's running now - but really roughly. It sounds and feels lumpy and the pops and bangs from the back sound like artillery fire. I can't take it above about 3000rpm or the emissions warning light comes on, and if I rev it past that it just drops a cylinder. So I then have to stop, turn it off, wait a few seconds and start it again, at which point the cylinder is back??

What's going on?

In the old days I would disconnect the plug leads one at a time until I got to the one that made no change in the way the engine was running, this would tell me which cylinder I was having a problem with, then take it from there. You did connect the leads to the correct cylinder/plugs when you replaced them?

^ turn the engine off to do this, you can get quite a jolt from the leads when it's running

Were the spark plugs gapped when you fitted them? Check all the leads are in the right order and seated properly

Will check all of this and report back, fairly sure I put them all in correctly but doesn't hurt to check.

Cheers
