Re: iPhone 5S - You Need it in your Life (NLC)
It's difficult to get an objective view on these types of things as most people champion which ever side they plumped for without even trying the competition.
And the people who have owned both will usually say the one which they have moved to is best to justify their decision to move!
I'm an iPhone person and cannot see me changing in the forseeable future.
I've had short plays with relatives and friends android phones (HTC and Samsung) and the interface seems unnecesarily complicated and unintuitive compared to iOS.
I've no doubt I could get used to them but that's kind of the point- when I moved to an iPhone I didn't have to 'get used to it', it was so simple that I intuitively knew how to do anything I wanted to do.
I'm an 'average' kind of user I guess, I want to use apps designed by other people to make my life easier, I have no desire to customise anything beyond my ringtone and wallpaper, and I want all of my music and apps and e-mail to be easily accessible on my device and backed up (on my PC or 'in the cloud').
To that end, the iPhone is perfect for my usage and since I'm probably typical of Apples target market, that's why it continues to be so popular.

In my experience android users are more likely to have tried iOS than the other way round.
I currently have both, an ipad and an HTC One X. Both were bought with my own money and were, Imho, the best option at the time of purchase.
The ipad is a lovely bit of kit and, for what I want to use it for, probably marginally better than the equivalent 10" android tab...... Purely due to the fact my work let me connect to exchange on my ipad but not on Android. The only other ipad specific app is evo magazine.
I love the range of accessories you can get for the ipad but being honest if I evo or work were more android friendly the ipad would be getting punted.
The other day I tried to get 600 wedding photos from a DVD onto an ipad to make the most of that gorgeous screen. We were going to visit relatives and show them some of the pics. After 30 mins of swearing violently and numerous Web searches I gave up. I ended up putting them in my aging netbook and a selection into my Android phone. Both took seconds. Things like that shouldn't be hard. They aren't hard if all the photos were taken in your iPhone... But every other option is long winded and painful.
End of the day the general consensus on this thread seems to be that iOS users shouldn't be scared of moving to Android. You aren't a moron if you stay, far from it, but you shouldn't automatically plump for iOS next upgrade.
Edit : security wise, technically android is less secure as anyone can build an app and upload it to Google play. In that respect it's the same as a pc. So, like pc, you only install legit looking apps and you install a security product. Job done.

Is it a coincidence that iOS7 looks very like an Android offering...?
(Whether it behaves like it when it comes to connectivity is another thing entirely).
I went from an HTC running early Android v.0.1 to an iPhone 4 and it was a huge step up.
So much so, I automatically took an iPhone 5 at launch as I was due an upgrade; might check out the competition a little more carefully next year, when the time comes.

I think this is the way to go at present - I like my phone to be a phone - the new N7 is really a slick bit of kit (though I don't have much use for one, Elliot bought one and he loves it).Sanjoy wrote:My Nexus 7 gen 2 rocks, best bang for your buck and fits in a suit inside pocket. I actually think the best integrated phone will be a windows phone, in the end.
Android is about to explode - the manufacturers have been happy to ride the wave whilst the market is growing so fast, but now it's time to take market share off your competitors they all want to differentiate. With Google's Play strategy looking like it will eventually subvert the OS and thus minimize the control that the manufacturers have I think that the Android market will inevitably fragment.
Most likely it will fragment into Android forks of one sort or another with each big player having their own fork and I imagine there will also be some loss of cross-platform compatibility. This will damage "Android + pals" overall market share, I suspect. At that point, who picks up the spoils? I think Windows phone is the next big thing ... just not sure when it's actually going to happen!
Cheers,
Robin

No problem Martin if the laptop and iPad are in wi-fi contact, I just put them into Dropbox on the laptop and watch them in Dropbox on the iPad.
I also bought a D-Link DIR-506L on Groupon for around £20. This is self powered and charged from a USB port and has built in wi-fi and a USB socket, so plug in a stick with anything that you want to watch on your i-Pad, download the 506L app, and your USB stick appears as an external hard drive as it should in the real world, then just click on the appropriate icon which separates your photos, movies, docs, etc.

Easy peasy...........

Drop box only works when you are online and there is no way to copy 600 photos onto the device other than one by one. I tried icloud too and that was worse.
I know you could buy d link or similar but after spending over £500 on an ipad I would want it to do that as standard.

Unfortunately Apple have you by the bollocks with their no port policy, so I was happy to spend £20 just to give them the finger.

Don't understand your Dropbox problem, I just copied 50 jpgs into Dropbox on my MBA instantly, and they appeared on the iPad straight away.

Obviously it only links by wi-fi as the files are not physically on your iPad, but I thought that you only wanted to look at them in high resolution.
As far as I know there is no way to put content onto an iPad, but it works for me as I am only using it in the house. I can plug in Lukes portable hard drive with his hundreds of films and music and select what I want, and Verian can do the same on hers.
