FAO Scotty - L200 - Is it p*sh?

Post by Lazydonkey » Thu Sep 28, 2006 9:04 pm

Trying to get a car / 4x4 / transport for the Mrs......nearly had it with a C class coupe thing....until she saw one in the metal.

She's now back onto wanting a 4x4 again and still likes the L200 - did you not just buy a few of them?

We had a Shogum sport TD out for a weekend 6 months ago and IMHO it was a sack of sh*t................is the new L200 better than the old one?

Yeah mate, I always wanted one from my DH days to put the rigs in the back. After Neil's experiences (3 engines in 3 years or summit!) I'd steer well clear!

My Old Man had a L200 for 3 years. It managed to munch through two engines, and countless rear springs (even heavy duty numbers), along with many other faults.

Made a reasonable tow vehicle, till it's oil cooler burst, and spat out it's contents all over the M8

Steer clear from Merc Benz too. We have 25 at work (E classes & S classes & Vianos). Badly built would be an understatement! My trusty Astra is a better built car the the mercedes of late!

Hi mate, I've had an L200 as a company car. Don't get one they're sore on engines and terrible on fuel and have a hopless turbo lag.
Go for the nissan nivara I've had the sport version for 3 years and it's been great, so much so that I've got a new 180bhp outlaw on order.

Hope this helps

I had an older p-reg at work for 3 years, 2.5 turbo deisel, and actually it just ran and ran. Got a real load of abuse too. Liked it, felt like driving a tank 8) tho a bit guzzly. Dunno bout the newer ones. It was far better than the pishy ford ranger we replaced it with IMHO

Yeah guy at work here in dundee has a Navara twin cab thing and says it does 30+mpg driven sensibly with the 2.4 i think he said and pushing 175bhp or something close!

Looks the part too, or you could get the wife a Ra Ra (aka Range Rover mk3) as you can pick up a 4.0 litre vogue for about 15-18k low miles - i know as the wife is dying for one! - help......

Ah sorry Neil forgot you had one too  Right well that's that out the window then. I had hoped the new one wasnt' just a facelift but it sounds like it is...............think we used £150 worth of diesel going to Newcastle and back in the Shogun Sport

I really like the Nissan but Jac isn't so keen - had a look at a Santa Fe last night (dont laugh) and it seemed to fit the bill but it looks like the poor residuals are going to make the lease payments too high.

Trying a Freelander (i know i know) and a RAV4 this weekend btu i dont think either will fit the bill. :(

we looked at an L200, the Isuzo Rodeo etc before buying a Navara (not the current model, nor the current L200).

Navara was a far superior steer (ok, nae saying much!), better gearshift, 133bhp v 113bhp for that generation of L200, better gearshift etc and better gear ratios - in that model of L200 the engine screams its head off at 75mph, hurting fuel economy massively.

Only problems we've had with the Navara: the fuel filter choked (but that was due to taking fuel from a dirty diesel tank), and there are two wee metal shields for the lock stops to hit onto - they get noisy and grindy if they aren't greased regularly - a 30 second job once every 2 months.
