Campbell
You know that you should swap the wheels for a smaller size and up the wall size on the tyre for added flexibility. On the plus side that will allow you to get cheaper tyres.
I run 235-45-18 on the Audi in the summer and 205-60-16 in the winter. It just depends on the calliper clearance. I got a full set of 16" Audi alloys for £50 on eBay, it makes pot holes less painful too. The handbook for the car should tell you what the winter size is. The model also tends to be type approved with the smallest size of rim so it's still fully within the manufacturers spec
If you're not living on the edge you're wasting too much space!

Can't change wheel size unfortunately. It's the spare 17's I have or nothing, I'm afraid!

Prefer the look of the 18s but it's not the end of the world.

On the way to work the temp was between 2 and -2 on the A71 and I was really impressed. Threw the car into a roundabout at work that normally results in some scrabbling at this time of year and the thing just gripped.

So far so good. :thumbsup

Winter tyres are for below 8 degrees. So by 6 degrees or less, there should be a noticable difference.
You don't need it to be snowing to need winter tyres.

Been tempted to purchase steels for winter tyres for the mINi this year, but need 17"er's to clear the front Brembos (and not all 17"er's do... :? )

Anyone had any luck with the Knockhill 'part worn winter option' recently?

(Wonder if they'll do a 205/45/17...?)

:thumbsup

I have become all wussy and bought new 14 inch steel wheels with new fitted AVON Ice Touring Winter Tyres from Mytyres for my Fiat 500. Grand total of £310 delivered.

Arnold Clark wanted £100 per single steel wheel. Hmmm.

I agree with George on the braking front, most 4x4,s will take as long, if not longer to stop on snow, more weight, big fat tyres etc, and that, for me , is the biggest advantage to winter tyres, stopping distance, and the abillity to steer when braking.
I also had an old Subaru, which was better than average on summer tyres, but was awsome on winters, ground clearance was its only problem.

Never really had the advantage of the Touareg on Vredersteins last winter, maybe this year.

has anyone used the Nankang Snow SV2's

looking to buy a couple of cheap and cheerful snow tyres for Claire's fiesta, her car was new last winter and we just ran the conti summer tyres, the car was pretty good in the snow being light and underpowered, seeing as there is now 15k miles on the tyres I was looking at throwing on winters on the front to keep her going through the winter seeing as we are pretty darn rural!

im not expecting the level of quality you get from vriedisten etc. but just looking for any feedback from anyone who has used them

Have run Nankang SV2's 205/50/17's on the wife's Impreza (non-turbo) for the last 3 winters without problems. They grip well in the cold and wet and are simply amazing in deep snow! :)
They feel a bit wooly in the dry and I think petrol consumption is down slightly although that could just be winter driving with the heater fan & air con running all the time.
After ~15k miles they still have 5mm of tread remaining. Would buy again for this car / tyre size.

I also ran a set of 225/55/17's on my Legacy last winter, they are okay but not so well suited to the heavier car & taller tyre profile. Running them again this year but would look for something different next time.

I expect the Nankang's would be fine on the Fiesta, certainly better than worn Conti's!
