what is the life expectancy of a bike?

I have a 1990s Cannondale mountain bike that's done thousands of miles with me over the years, Lands end to John O Graots, Genoa to Nice and back, a week in Grand Canaria and all the stuff i did round Scotland trainging for each journey etc and she still works great when I dust her off and drag her out from the back of the shed.. so I guess if you start with something semi decent and look after it it will last indefinately?

Weighs hee haw and still a dream to ride if I was fit enough to go it lol... I used to be a very keen cyclist and did 30 odd miles a night before I feft the Island in the early to mid 90s on my old road bike, cant remember the model, maybe a record? I think it was a 531 frame and full 105 group set, I loved that bike, that was when the shifters were on the frame lol, waaaay back when lol. I'm sure that bike will still be on the go back home, sold it when I left home for beer money lol

Anyone looking for a set of 700C mudguards? Got these through yesterday, but then realised they don't fit around the calipers on my disc equipped cross bike (which for some reason still has 4x mudguard eyelets on it). Box opened, but completely unused.

I few pages ago I was asking about CX bikes, bought a Boardman CX Team in the end. I've been commuting regularly on it, just 10 miles each way but I'm getting a bit more 'cycle fit' in the usual commuter peleton.

Anyway, last weekend I took it offroad for the first time on some local mountain bike trails. What a hoot!
I cringed a bit over the jumps and really rough stuff at first but generally I didn't give it any leeway and it took everything my limited skills could throw at it. It was particularly awesome climbing the hills.
I got a few double takes from the 'full-sus' folks I'd caught up who let me past. Some nutter on a 'racer'...

The only thing I did was let the tyre pressures down a bit. Pumped them up afterwards and set about embarrassing the roadies again.

It really is an excellent compromise bike.

I bought the Planet X Merino Seamless Arm Warmers and they shrunk in the wash, not a hot one, and they didn't come with any washing instructions.
Holes in the socks after a handful of rides (buy the SOS ones they are really comfy and last for ages).
PX/On-One gloves fall apart at the seams pretty quickly, but they are cheap.
You get what you pay for.

Nice bike.
I went into the bike shop the other week to buy a cheap winter training bike, £500 tops. Came out with a Cervelo R5 Ultegra Di2 with Mavic R-SYS SLR wheelset. Somewhat blew the budget. My excuse was the frame was half price . Did end up with a winter bike out of it though as I've relegated my Spesh Roubaix Di2 to winter duties leaving the Tarmac SL4 Di2 and the R5 for better days. Must stay away from the bike shop for the next few months!
