Free Sky Broadband Wireless Booster

Post by Sanjøy » Sun Jan 12, 2014 11:05 am

After a few years of championing home plugs I have canned the second set that have packed up and gone gigbit cabling. Pays to have a wee agile wife ;)

All of my lights are either cfl or led which can put interference back into the mains which I think is challenging the home plug if you know how they work.
The wifi home plugs are good bits of kit though.

Any catch on the Sky wireless repeater?
Sounds like a cheap trick to get you to renew your contract for another 12 months - anyone read the T&Cs?

Paranoid much? Still i guess it makes a change from people moaning about how existing customers don't get anything at all from Sky

They've been punting it pretty heavily as being free for existing customers until the end of January, then I'm guessing they'll be charging for it. Not aware of any changes to t&cs and not sure how it could extend your contract.

Full info here and no mention of changes to T&C's

For balance, I'll moan. They've run out so pulled the offer, typical of Sky to offer something for some of their customers, but not for others

;)

Just kidding, was just in it for something for nothing / to see if these things work well compared to my Shug style setup with 2 wireless routers.
I run a (couple of) 20m patch cable under the house rather than using homeplug connections though. Very easy to set up, and swap over when we switched to Sky from Virgin and the original router location was changed.

On a different Sky note, they recently REFUSED to take extra money from us. We called up to add Sky Sports for a month to watch the NFL Playoffs. Apparently making the change would have cancelled what remains on our current discount, so our money went to the NFL website instead.

Done. Took approx ten minutes to set up, and now sending this from my (previously) black spot which was in my kitchen. Stone-built house with very thick structural internal walls.

So, success :thumbsup

Good to hear. I am in the exact same boat, 100 year old house, thick brick internal walls and the router signal stops from kitchen back. I have wired the house with cat 6 but not got round to terminating the ends and looking at hardware required so this will do in the meantime and best of all free!

Synched with my router at the same location, then positioned in the black spot, so you'd also have it in your kitchen Scott I guess :D

Also worth noting I've not felt any loss in speed :thumbsup
