The Window advise centre. is a bit like a comparison site. Only one chap will visit, and measure your windows. They then contact the company's on your half, and all windows & fixing are guaranteed for ten years. We saved time, and more importantly money.

He has been out of the game for a couple of months following an op. I've sent him a text to see if he is back at it.Stephen wrote:Could you please pm me your joiner's details.

I had a look at their stuff - neat - they have youtube videos and everythingTitanium S1 111S (gla) wrote:I looked at this recently for our Victorian sandstone house.

Unfortunately cannot contemplate changing from sash and case, and we have shutters through most of the house, so that's our "double glazing"

I'll leave insulation to the next owners, I think!
Meanwhile we pay the joiners to come and overhaul the windows and weights from time to time - never cheap, but cheaper than new ones!

Most of our replacements are for modern, wooden, sash and case. Only the kitchen windows are double swing and those are to the rear elevation.robin wrote:I had a look at their stuff - neat - they have youtube videos and everythingTitanium S1 111S (gla) wrote:I looked at this recently for our Victorian sandstone house.

I had originally wanted to keep our original windows, it was only because Mrs C was very insistent and because the economics or refurbishment didn’t stack that I set about changing them. Like everything else in our house the windows had been neglected. Rot had set in to quite a few, there were lots of broken pains of glass and they were very drafty. It could all have been fixed but it would have cost almost as much as replacement.
I am please with the results, the improvement in insulation is probably negligible but getting rid of the drafts has been a major benefit. The gale that came in our bathroom window in particular could make an early morning shower in January a bracing experience.

Regarding CR Smith. Posted on here a few months back as I had a 6 hinges to repair on a double patio door. Wife called CR Smith , had a quote of £2600 for "new doors" after an hour long conversation he eventually understaood no was no , he said I will see if someone internal can fit it. I believe CR Smith outsource the fitting in general. So a couple of joiners turned up a couple of days later and said £260. Bam was done in a hour. Hats off to CR Smith for sorting this out. Wish i had got the joiners number !
Re: Double glazing.
Thanks so much for all of that.
Graham we refurbished about ten years ago and, in hindsight we should probably have replaced. But hey, your post was illuminating and whilst we don't have shutters (Robin) we do have heavy curtains...

Re: Double glazing.
Anyone know where I could get two small double glazed panes or secondary glazing? Have two windows in the lounge high on a wall that must be spewing out heat.

Sanjoy, try Cruikshanks in michelston industrial estate in Kirkcaldy.
They supplied and cut to size a couple of bits of glass for me recently and were far cheaper than anywhere I could find online.

Hi Sanj,
Are you planning on removing the glass and refitting the new unit yourself? If so pop out the glass get the exact size you need and I'm sure I can get you the units made up cheap enough.

That's the plan but naturally it would not be me doing the install....

Re: Double glazing.
You installing a full new window (casement) or just the glazing unit? is the current unit double glazed? If you're just changing the unit, surely refit is just the opposite of removal?Sanjoy wrote:That's the plan but naturally it would not be me doing the install....
If you can get me the size and the thickness of the unit I can get you a price mate.
