Re: Frolic 13 (2015)
I don't mind the drive through France if we've had a stopover the night before, ferry or hotel. It's not so bad taking 9 hours to drive to Orange but as Ali said if we get Charade we may well only have Clermond Ferrand to drive to for day one. (Not sure when Ledanon is booked for).

Re: Frolic 13 (2015)
Is the over night Portsmouth to Le Harve sailing of any use?
We used to use that to get to Magny and Val De Vienne

Re: Frolic 13 (2015)
Clermond Ferrand is still a fair old schlepp - it's not quite as far as Orange, but not that much nearer either - so people that are happy to drive to Orange in a day will be happy to do CF instead; those that are baulking at Orange are unlikely to think CF is much better.

Just checked Quicken, Nov 2004, we did the Ring but never even got on it due to the snow. Robin will remember if I have it correct, but we left around 0400 from the Hotel zur Burg and drove home in one go, 1050 miles for me.robin wrote:That's the new me thinking; old me would have done Edinburgh->Orange in a daycampbell wrote:Don't know where you get your stamina from, Robin!

Did we not kip over at Robins and do a track day at KH the next day?

That was a different trip, I think. I have only done the odd 1,000 mile/day trip - I think 800 miles is a sane limit

Was sure you couldn't have been snowed off the Ring on 2 separate occasions!

Nice one Campbell. Record bookings this early surely?
Re: Frolic 13 (2015)
I think Spazz must hold that Honour, 22 bookings in the first 24 hours. If its only half as good it will be great, but these trips just seem to get better and better.BigD wrote:Nice one Campbell. Record bookings this early surely?
Paul just keeps on producing a brilliant time for us all.
OK, now I really should tell the wife I'm off with the boy's again.
Re: Frolic 13 (2015)
Evaluating Chunnel too.
IBIS Calais (regular or Budget) are £54 and £44 respectively for outward stopover.
Travelodge Ashford £34 for way back.
Assume £150 rtn for Le Shuttle.

Re: Frolic 13 (2015)
If you look at the ferry/Chunnel comparison:
Ferry is cheap and relaxing if you can share a cabin so £450 return if not sharing and £250 to £300 if sharing. Takes longer but much easier drive this side. Slightly further the other side. (Ijmuiden is 200 miles north of Calais.)
Chunnel is say £100 for crossing (using the 2 separate day returns method), £100 for hotels and an extra £50 return in fuel. Totals £250. With an extra 300 miles roughly.
The last option is the hull ferry. So slightly further drive in the uk (140 miles each way) but it lands in zeebrugge which is only 80 miles north of Calais. So roughly 200 miles saved (over the Chunnel) and I think it's slightly cheaper than the DFDS ferry (need to check). Departure and arrival times are good too as its a shorter crossing than DFDS. (Check in by 5pm and arrival at 9am) So if sharing gets you this for £250 to £300 maybe less and saves 200 miles I think it could be a good alternative. I know Frank has used this crossing in the past.
My rough calculation would suggest that the Chunnel route with a stopover would get you to orange at 3pm/4pm and ferry route would be 7 or 8pm. It's worse on the way back as the ferry doesn't leave till 7pm when you could be driving home. I was home the last time by the time Dave was not long on the ferry so still had a whole extra night.

Re: Frolic 13 (2015)
Chunnel is definitely quicker and more flexible because you can pretty much always get on a train; even if the auto-checkin doesn't put you on the train you want, you can often sweet talk the people behind the desk in the terminal to put you on the train you want
Ferry is definitely least stress, but sloooowwww.
Cheers,
Robin
