Re: Defender's - Winter hack
Well to my uneducated eye the Defender in Glasgow seemed pretty sound so we have put a deposit down subject to inspection.
Some of the pics of the chassis. Have taken a load of pics of the chassis but can't seem to find out how to share from Google +.
Appears to be a TDi (200) but looking back as some of the small amount of paperwork it may have had the 200 converted to 300 (presume that is possible?)

Re: Defender's - Winter hack
Just noticed I said Defender, I meant Mk1 Discovery.
Defenders are superb, do a bit of off roading in it George, you'll be amazed at what they can do.

Re: Defender's - Winter hack
I have a 200tdi in mine and Ross has the 300. You can put the 300 manifold and turbo on a 200 block which helps to get the exhaust past the chassis but there are more differences than that.
Of you send me a link to your Google+ photos I'll have a look.
It's more likely to be a TD converted to a 200 or 300. Probably a disco engine as they are more easy to come by.

300 TDI. Looks nice too.
I take it the steering box and the sump gasket are both leaking they nearly all do that.
Enjoy.

Re: Defender's - Winter hack
I'm replacing the front axle on mine at the moment. The diff pan rusted through and started leaking and then the panhard rod Mounting fitted and failed the mot. I just picked up a disco diff for £50 complete with calipers to refurb then fit.

Stephen,
So after looking at the pictures, does it look like I have picked a lemon or does the chassis etc look sound?

It looks OK and well cared for.
The chassis tends to rot from the rear forwards. The how was the rear cross member? Did you poke it with something.
I spotted the repair behind the rear shock mounting. That is not uncommon. Give it a waxoil inside and out as soon as you get it and it should be fine.

Unfortunately as I was running late I did not manage to pick up the screwdriver
school boy error!!!
However as he was happy with the deal being subject to inspection I can always pull out if its shot.

I would give it a poke with a screwdriver before you finally do the deal. If it has any problems then the rear cross member outriggers will be the telltale. Assuming that the cross member is original. Was there any sign off it having been replaced?

Stephen,
To be honest I would not be able to tell as my mechanical knowledge is limited
Will be arranging for someone who knows what they are doing to look at the car. Last night was not make sure it appeared sound, was not obviously rotten and to get in quick before it was sold.

Re: Defender's - Winter hack
Well, just got the inspection done on the car and they have picked up a few things:
- Offside Interior door handle does not work
- Nearside Brake light does not work (obviously an MOT fail when its due in December)
- Nearside Front door does not open from handle
- Brake pipes have some very, very slight corrosion
- Nearside rim has some slight damage (possibly buckled) which has meant the tyre is also slightly deteriorated
- Chassis/Rear cross member is good - some previous repairs but done to a high standard
Any idea how much a Power Steering box costs to fix as I may be able to get the price down slightly?

That all sounds either pretty minor or easily fixable. I have a spare power steering box. No idea where it leaks or not though. I just picked it up with the new axle as part of a job lot.

Thanks for that.
I phoned Andrew Storry as it will probably need a service as well. As its an engine conversion their may be a number of different power steering boxes that is on it. So maay just get a reconditioned part as he will be fitting it (some simple stuff I could probably do but dealing with steering I would rather leave to the professionals).
Paddocks have reconditioned ones for £260ish with £100 back when you return your current one (http://www.paddockspares.com/parts-and- ... boxes.html).
Would have taken you up on it if I was fitting it myself
