Decisions??
Decisions??
Hi all, i'm new here.
I'm looking for some advice,
Well at the mo i drive a 300 brake scoob and do the odd trackday. In the near future i'm thinking of a change and i have 3 cars in mind.
1: newer scoob type r
2: evo 6
3: S1 elise
So obviously looking for some advice on the elise.
1: i want it to be on par with a 350 to 400 brake scoob on the straights. I know it will be quicker through the bends. I rekon about 250 ish bhp will be roughly the same power to weight as a 375 brake sti. (this is very roughly).
I've heard that a civic type r engine fits easily, is this true? I know n1tut's car is quick but didn't get a chance to talk to him about it at the last k.h day.
The other option is fit a turbo to the k- series engine but i think this'll be more of a headache trying to fit intercooler etc.
Anyway it's an idea at the mo but any help would be great.
Even just opinions.
Cheers Johnny.

Have a read at that page, it details all the bhps / weights etc.
Tut and mckeann both have honda S1`s so will be able to comment.
welcome along!

Hiya.
I have a honda type R engine in my elise and it is a flyer. Your almost right, a 220bhp elise is as quick as a 360bhp ish evo/scooby but the elise will be quicker through the twisties if you know what your doing. 220bhp is the most you will see from a standard honda conversion, although 300bhp is easily possible with a bit more cash.
Without trying to sound like a know it all, most on here will agree that a standard elise is more than enough for newbies to the elise. Its is totally unlike any 4wd saloon and takes a lot of getting used to. It took me 6 months to get used to mine, and 2 years until i was bored with the standardish engine and wanted more power.
Just a suggestion, but you may not get the most out of the elise's better side (the handling) if you get too much power too soon.

I can not advise you as to whether you should stick with a Scooby, or try an Evo, or even change over to an Elise, as though the other two are similar, ours is a whole new ball game.
Most of our members use it as their one and only everyday road car, but many drive it along to the track every chance they get. A Scooby/Evo is a better all weather/year round car, that you use every day, and also an excellent track car, especially with the higher power outputs and uprated brakes, but it is 4WD, twice the weight, and twice as thirsty.
However it is highly unlikely that you will be disappointed with an Elise, especially when you get onto empty, windy, hilly roads, or on the track.
If you are thinking of going this way, and do not have a fat wallet, then you will get far more satisfaction from buying a standard S1 or S2, get some miles and experience in it, then probably go for broke with a Honda N/A conversion, around £10K and 220hp, or the S/C version, £13.5K and 300hp, or Bernard Scouses Audi T/C conversion, 250hp for £7.5K, or 330hp for £9.5K.
I would not advise starting out with the highest hp, as it is like getting a Ferrari as your first car at 17, where do you go from there?

Hi Johnny,
Not intending to hi-jack but can I ask Tut and Neil an on-topic q?
Are both your cars 220bhp? I thought it was 200, or is it because your engines are JDM spec? And also, I realise that you get the 6 spd honda box? but do you get an LSD? If not, does the lack of LSD make much of a problem?
Cheers
Dave

Mine is a new jap spec JDM engine, officially 217hp on 100RON. However I never reached that untill I fitted a Dastek Unichip, which gave me 215hp.
Mine was a BLINK conversion, but Neil has a used UK spec engine fitted by Sinclairs, officially 197hp, but they fit an uprated in line fuel pump, and a programmable Hondata ECU, which gives between 220-230hp.
Judging by Saturdays KH, he does have the edge on the straight, but I did not want to embarrass him by overtaking on the corners.

Mine and tuts cars are different, but in actual fact, its not that much.
Tuts is a JDM motor with a lower ratio gearbox and a LSD. His should have 212bhp but in actual fact, i dont think he has this. Probably due to a combination of the mapping and his standard fuel pump.
Mines is a UK spec engine, which has a close ratio gearbox, 6th is the same as the lotus CR 5th, and doesnt have a LSD. Mines should have 197bhp as standard, but the air filter , exhaust, ecu, and a second high pressure fuel pump mean my car should be in excess of 220bhp on a good day.
I would love to fit the JDM gearbox to mine. The JDM engine has the potential for more power due to the different cams, but the uk engine is a better engine if you plan to supercharge it.
Does that make sense??

Clear as mud!!
I should have realised things are never straightforward.
I will hassle one or both of you for pax laps early next year at a TD. Keen to sample the performance.
One last question. Have the cars been troublesome or niggly after the conversion in any way (Other than wearing out consumables quicker
) or is it a pretty much turnkey conversion.
TIA from me!
cheers

Cheers for the replies guys, lots to think about.
Tut, if i get the elise it'll defo stay standard for a year (ish) till i get used to it. If i go ahead i'll be doing most of the work (if not all) myself so costs shouldn't be too high.
Did you do the conversion yourself?
Oh it'll be a weekend, track toy.
Cheers, Johnny

Yes, a little bit, but a lot less troublesome and a lot easier to fix than my car was with the K series
