Re: Winter tyres. Discuss.
Went for Pirelli Winter 270 Sottozero 235/40 R19 96W XL in the end from Tyre Leader. Great price and great tyre with C rating for both fuel economy and wet weather grip and a B for Noise. Strangely looking forward to the winter now

I remember the last snowmagedon, M8 was shut. Kilmarnock didn't even get enough for a snowball

Was going to put my newly acquired winters on last weekend but the temperatures for this week were still forecast to be high. Next week is looking to be a bit colder so maybe this weekend.

I take it that was about 1100? If so that was me arriving for an 0900 meeting after 3+hours to do a 20 mile commute after the M74 was closedcampbell wrote:Spotted you today, actually, slithering around George Sq

Winters went on the Golf at the weekend. 3rd season on the Dunlop Winter Sport 4D.
They were premium price but still awesome wet grip and minimal impact to GTi handling and feel.
I'm sure newer and better tyres are now available...
Always personal choice but I prefer a tyre optimised for cold wet feel and grip over ultimate snow performance. Read the reviews with care on this. A top scoring tyre might not be the best for likely use in Scottish winters.

Re: Winter tyres. Discuss.
Yoko W drives fitted to the evora on friday. Coped well in the monsoon on the way back from MMC....... Not quite so brilliant yesterday on the way to and from work in 10 degree "heat". Nothing disastrous... Just a bit less planted feeling... Steering a wee bit more vague on initial turn in at speed.
Hoping they get better once they are a bit more worn and the temp drops.

Holding off fitting to both cars for the time being. Even on my 6am commute the temperature isn't regularly below the magic 7C yet.

I've also got Yoko W to go on, but waiting until the temp drops further. Had them on last year and the difference when very cold outside was significant.

Here's a valid question....most winters are a necessity on the typically modern low profile tyres...yes?
Brand new city car, so full tread, good tyre make, narrow-ish 165/70R14, 60bhp thru front wheels. How would they cope in a little snow?

Re: Winter tyres. Discuss.
We ran our panda on 155/55 14" Goodyear efficient grip summer tyres and it was unstoppable in the snow a few years back. Was the only car that could make it up the hill outside Mrs Donkey's school every day. The standard eco tyres weren't amazing when they got a bit worn though.
I think the issue is most cars come on for low profile rubber that is either optimised for economy (no real cuts in the trend) or performance and as such really struggles in the winter.
I know my w drives are on a bit early but mmc are keeping my summers for me and I had to coordinate diaries
