Being Edinburgh, it will take them 20 years, and end up costing £50 billion.

Actually they've done quite a lot of it already. Luckily for me, it's in the south of the city, whereas we live in the north.

The proposal is to make the whole city a 20mph zone and thus only require signage for the bits that are 30 ... that requires a change of law at Scottish Government level. It if goes ahead it won't then cost much.

Cheers,
Robin

Good for publicity, but will it make much difference? Every time I go to Edinburgh, I'm lucky to get close to 20mph most of the time ;)

You'd have to be committed (read that either way) to do more than 20mph on the cobbled streets. Not sure I've seen the traffic move much faster than 20 in Edinburgh normally anyway?

I'd be more concerned about the end to free Sunday parking, makes driving to the pub & dumping the car for collection once sober a total pain.

I thought it was a bit of a non story.
New lower speed limit in city that's mostly near enough gridlocked

I suppose it might keep the tree huggers and speed protestors happy.

Did the burg not vote on no cars in the city centre a good few years back?

I appreciate the sentiment but it will be bad for business as it will not force me on to a tram.

Glasgow has gone the stealth route for banning cars in the centre. It has one bus gate and is looking to enforce another 2 this year. Basically a point only buses and taxis can pass during daytime hours.
Supposed to be to reduce pollution but they are making hundreds of thousands through fining motorists using the restricted routes. I reckon it causes more overall pollution as cars sit in longer jams to go the long way around the restricted areas :?

Yea, I was going to post a bitchy comment about Edinburgh becoming less inviting to visit, but then thought how difficult it is becoming to get into Glasgow. You want to live, work, shop or visit in Glasgow city, then Glasgow council says "go fcuk yourself, you we are making as difficult as possible for you".

There was an e-petition on-going to reject the . I had this response today:

Dear All

Thank you for your interest in 20 mph speed limits and for responding to the online questionnaire. Following the close of the consultation, responses have been analysed and used to inform a revised network which will be submitted to the Transport & Environment Committee on 13 January 2015.

The Committee report including an analysis of findings and a revised network can be viewed on the Council’s website at www.edinburgh.gov.uk/20mph

I got that too. Can't see it making one bit of difference though.
We've already got a 20 zone which I don't have any objection to. We live in a residential area with lots of families and a primary school nearby.
What annoys me is the bloody speed bumps every 50m.
If the 20 zones get rolled out across the rest of the city, I can see it leading to more speed bumps, therefore more damage to cars and more pollution as drivers speed up and slow down between them.

A lot of the streets that are being proposed for 20mph you will never have driven on - they are the routes that people use to avoid the traffic and in doing so they speed along them. There's plenty of streets around Edinburgh where you can go faster than 30 if you want to. But you'll be flying past parked cars in residential areas - so the chances are you'll struggle to avoid dog/cat/kid that strays into the street. Personally I think it makes sense - most of the time you never do more than 20 anyway.

Cheers,
Robin

PS I don't think it will lead to more speed bumps - the point of the lower speed limit is to avoid the need for obstacles of this type.

Our estate is already a 20 mph zone for this very reason. It makes sense to me especially as we having young children. It's a shame though that many drivers ignore it, probably those that are likely the target of the changes.

Much more difficult to effectively police on back roads too so the chances of enforcement are fairly low
