Re: SE Baby thread NLC
Next question.....
We have been using the rear facing car baby seat from birth, but Anna is already getting a bit too big for it. We are on holiday over seas just now, and have a forward facing baby seat, which she seems to fit in well, and is happy with - which is a bonus! We had been thinking we would be needing to look for car seats when we get home, but looks like this will happen sooner than later. We will likely try and get a seat than can evolve as she grows,so we'll have it for years. We bought our travel system from Jan Stewart prams and baby paraphernalia shop in East Kilbride, but a quick look at their website does not seem to offer much options for car seats. We will probably pay them a visit at some point, but I was wondering what type of seat peeps would recommend, and if there are any places to buy from that are better? - I suspect if we find a seat we like,we will probably order it from Amazon.
Also, we have three cars, all of which we use to transport Anna, (although only occasionally in the elise). I was thinking I might get two seats (one of which is elise friendly), so they can live in the two cars we use the most - purely for convenience. Is this the norm? or are we just lazy? I quite like the look of the recaro seats, simply because they match the interior of my chav mobile

Recaro Young Sport. Bought on recommendation from Clan Ford, and very pleased.
Cons: Not isofix. Harness shoulder pads could do with better velcro.
Pros: Everything else. Price. Easy to fit and secure. Good lateral support. Easy to remove covers for the inevitable sick-cleaning-up job. Good head support for sleeping. Harness feels well positioned (narrow at the shoulders, lap belt low on hips).

Better seats out there? Dunno. Would I bother finding anything else if/when we need another seat? Nope. Same again for me. Quite happy.
Bought ours in Mothercare, just because they had it in stock locally and I wanted to try it out to make sure it fitted the car ok.

We got a Recaro Monza Nova for Murron, she is well protected but wait until your wee one is a bit bigger.

Re: SE Baby thread NLC
We have just moved Juliette (at 13 months) into her 2nd seat.
We opted for a Joie Stages as it allows extended rear facing (google ERF car seat) - until she is around 4.
UK law is supposed to be changing to rear facing until 18 months, which is a step in the right direction...
There are plenty of websites that advise on this so I won't try to sell you on the idea.
It is a group 0+,1 and 2 I think so can be used for AGES (including from birth). It can also be used as a forward facing seat.
It is also seatbelt fit only, and all ERF seats are kinda big so worth getting a trial fit to ensure all is ok. Halfords stock it, we had them trial fit to ensure it was ok.
It's now in the back of our Panda, front seat leg space leaves a lot to be desired mind!
I suspect it won't fit the Elise in rear facing fashion (the issue is often the length of the seat belt, though Elise buckets, not a clue..).

I've got 2 Britax Trio's here. Not Isofix. But free! (Fits Elise, transmogrifies into a booster seat.) Great for the grandparents' cars?

Recaro Young Sport. Obviously. You can buy an Isofix adapter base if you really feel the need.
They evolve brilliantly with the kids. And are completely dismantlable for deep clean sick removal. In a car park. With a single screwdriver. Pads / covers fully washable.

Having 2 seats is a definite advantage. We have the new maxicosi tobi which does the job well, and got given the last version of the tobi from my sister.
Very easy to get in and out of the car when needed.

Re: SE Baby thread NLC
We've always had a seat for each car, it does make things easier.
First one we bought was a Recaro Young sport. It's OK.
Looks great and appears to give them plenty of support but I'd say it's designed by people who design good car seats, not good child car seats IYSWIM.
The main problem being the harnesses which just hang limply when the child isn't in it!
This makes it much harder to get a wriggling child in.
Also the cord and button arrangement for tightening the harnesses is a bit fiddly- my wife couldn’t work the release mechanism properly.
We then bought a MaxiCosi Tobi which is much better. Harnesses are spring loaded so they are out of the way when you dump the child in the seat, tightening mechanism is easier to use and it self loosens when you undo the clasp.
It's also easier to fit into the car using the seatbelt (Recaro is slightly fiddly as you have to pass the belt through the back of it) and it feels more secure.
Problem with the Maxi cosi is that once they no longer need the five point harness you have to get a new seat whereas the Recaro converts to a high backed booster.
Once they are using the high backed booster the Recaro becomes a much better choice, probably offering more support than the MaxiCosi RodiFix we got to replace the Tobi.
Wouldn’t be a bad idea to buy a Recaro for the occasional car but a Tobi (or similar) for the main family car….

Recently got one of these for Beth.
http://cybex-online.com/gb/carseats/sirona.html
She was in her first car seat for longer than a lot of babies cause (in the words of our sonographer) she's got her mums legs. So far really pleased with it. Keeps her rear facing for longer and when front facing will have the lap belt pad thing which is supposed to help prevent basal skull fractures vs 5 point belt. Great advantage is being able to rotate it to face the door for ingress and egress. Not the cheapest admittedly but then babies aren't anyway and what price can one realistically put on 3yrs of safety.

Dom - saying this because I know we've got the same car seat - are you sure you've adjusted it as high as the shoulder straps will go? Just asking as I know Thomas is a long baby and I've just extended ours to the biggest position - seems like there's lots of headroom still in it.
