Bricklayer Reccomendations (West Lothian)

A bit of an eventful day as a car managed to crash right outside our house, hit another car which veered into our brick wall. Spent a good hour this morning managing the traffic outside the house while the ambulances and police arrived on the scene. It was bad enough to have the road closed The guy in the car looked in quite bad shape so here's hoping he recovers.

The car was in a right mess and lots of debris in our front garden with shards of windscreen glass all over our driveway.

As the wall is mega thick it has not come down but the top section has definitely come loose so will need to get sorted out.



Looking for recommendations of anyone who who's a good bricklayer to secure the wall. It does not look bad in the pictures but all the stones have moved and they are pretty wobbly - not good for such big stones.

Suspect the railing may have to come up (which was fine as I was planning to paint them as the previous owners left them in quite a state).

Is that brick or cut stone? Not sure if it makes a difference, TBH, but might need different materials if it's not just straight brick?

I think you are right that it may be cut stone. The house is Grade "B" listed so it would not surprise me that the wall was built using old methods of stone rather than bricks.

All I know is that they would be pretty damn heavy to move so may not be a simple job. Probably not helped by having the railing on top.

Shouldn't you be claiming on the guys car insurance?

If it's cut stone you need to check if it's lime mortar. If it is then don't accept a poor repair with sand & cement, it will look terrible.

I suspect a good builder will sort it without any specialist input, but, if it is more complex, we used a company called CBC stone when we had a filming incident demolish a (grade A listed building) wall, but that was waaay more complicated and specialised as it involved quarrying stone etc.

It will be sorted through the owners insurance (bit complicated as the guy who hit our wall does not look to be the one at fault but we will obviously claim of him).

Have just contacted a local stonemason who will come out to see what needs done. Any recommendations would be welcome however

However was concerned that curtilage (I.e. boundaries) can count for a listed building. However we should be ok as long as we are not changing the stone.

Had something similar to our wall a couple of years ago. BMW hit the wall and damaged a good bit of it. We used a stone mason from Blackburn (west Lothian) who was excellent. Cost to repair was pretty frightening mind you - old style stone work doesn't come cheap.

I had the unfortunate misfortune to be involved in a 3 car shunt two weeks ago. I was the car in front and managed to claim directly off the insurance of the car at the back who caused the accident. Car who hit me and got sandwiched wasn't involved at all with the claim from my perspective.
