Just spent the day at the Scottish Open in Gullane. Utterly fantastic. If they can keep up the high level of players attending, I don't think I would bother ever going back to a main Open. Probably helped by the weather today, but no big crowds, again helped by being the first day, and really easy to get up and close to the players and the tees/greens. Hats off to the organisation too and the number of marshals, helpers etc. Gullane, being on a small hill, has such natural topography for viewing meaning hardly any stands needed to be erected and 360 degree views which are utterly amazing. Starting to sound like a rep for Visit Scotland or Visit East Lothian now, but highly recommend it if thinking of going along.

One recommendation is to head out to the far side and stand behind the green of the short par 3, think it was hole number 12. Set in a natural bowl and right by the sea, it's a great setting. Also the top of the hill by 16th (I think) green, a massive 600 yard hole that most were getting birdies on.

I played it a few times in competitions (back when I used to be good at golf

I love the Scottish Open at Gullane, wife's a member there so she's down for 4 day's on marshalling and scorer duties.
Perfect bliss here in Aberdeen on my own, total control of the TV remote and the beer fridge.
I'll go down for Sunday if the sun is shining.

Have had a wander onto the course most days in the past fortnight during preparations and practice days (no entry fee for practice days unlike the Open).
Compared to when the Open comes to Muirfield (I only watch golf if I can walk from my house…
), the lack of security henchmen around players, etc, is a breath of fresh air. A really laid back atmosphere, with the players far more *in* our community than the bigger event when they tend to be whisked to/from the course… my young son helping caddies rake bunkers, chats with players on (and off) the course, etc. Happy days.

If the weather is fair, I intend to be there on Sunday.
On a walk around the course I'd recommend: the 1st green due to it's tiny size and wee amphitheatre setting, the 6th tee on top of Gullane Hill for the panoramic views, the cliff-top location of 11th tee, stopping for a while at the 12th green, and visiting the new championship tee on the 18th.
