Use my S as a daily driver, doing about 35 miles a day with it, used to be all back roads which was great but now it's the M8 with the new job. Does feel like a bit of a waste sometimes but I always feel happy when I'm driving the car so I'm not too fussed.

I average about 19mpg normal and about 12mpg when on a blast with friends. Not the most economical car but I really enjoy driving the car so I don't think about the fuel economy when I'm enjoying it. I'm not super rich or rich for for that matter but I dont smoke or drink so the cars drinking habit is sustainable for me.

Twice now I have nipped down to Tescos in Keith, 2.5 miles, to buy a couple of items for Verian, and returned home 90 mins later.

Problem is that both the B9014 to Dufftown and the B9016 to Buckie both go from Keith and my will power is pretty low. Fuel averaged 29mpg.

I think I get somewhere in the region of 20-25 on the road and 7 on track. As Robin says, if you're doing a lowish mileage it doesn't really matter.

Stuart,

If you're thinking about getting a V6 Exige feel free to nip over to have a shot of mine.

So we can conclude that the supercharger nukes mpg. The CR box on the evora nukes MPG and both together REALLY nuke MPG.

Which will explain the low initial low numbers from the OP.

The answer is clear. NA evora, standard box
Focus ST estate, i3s and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.

....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?

1l fuel is £1.05 (say)

5K/year at 20mpg = 1200.

Meanwhile you could own a nice economical VW diesel, say a Passat that does 45mpg = 10m/l ; diesel costs more or less the same per litre at present so that's 525.

Now apply man maths. Any newish Lotus you buy that isn't brand new will depreciate negligibly over 5K. Your Passat will be worthless within seconds of buying it. The Lotus is cheaper. Buy one.

Cheers,
Robin
To put this in another context, on a monthly basis which so many household budgets centre upon...

The difference in the fuel costs is around £56 per month. Similar to a couple of mobile phone bills, 3 rounds of beers, a (modest) meal out for two inc wine, 2 family takeaways, one tank of fuel, etc etc etc.

To offset that figure, the thirsty fancy car simply has to offer depreciation of £56 per month less than the frugal sensible car. So the thirsty fancy one doesn't even have to offer a perfectly flat residual...it just has to be £675 a year less steep than the frugal sensible one. This was actually what kickstarted our "fun 2nd car" project with a MINI Cooper around 5 years ago.

The simple fact is most buyers simply do not see the hidden charge of residuals eating away at their pocket. They only notice the hit when standing in front of a pump in a filling station, or when it hits the credit card each month.

If there was an equivalent stat to mpg which manufacturers had to quote to show expected residuals, call it a "Residuals Index", say, then a lot of buyers would get quite a fright and it may even change their buying behaviour. However the moment you drop emotion into it, and the stats matter not a jot.

Which is why you should just go and buy what you fancy, disconnect the mpg display, drive the wheels off it, and enjoy the positive emotions.

Lesson Ends.

The more I think about it the more I come to realise ours should be a keeper. However at that point both the man-maths AND the Evoranomics break down

When I had OCH and did mega miles in the Elise it was great to see the price of oil decreasing, but I have changed my mind at its present level. At this stage of life I have become more selfish outside of what affects my family, but I would happily see oil go back to the $80-100 mark if it stopped the layoffs happening and exploration going ahead again.

My three are all in the Oil Industry with just Clare affected so far with a 20% cut, Luke is going onto 3 and 3 but looks safe at present, Ian is thriving in Canada, already had one promotion and is running an Offshore project at short notice for which he gets his daily allowance on top. Of three close friends one has just had a cut of 40%, another 25%, and the third laid off this week. It is obviously affecting the housing market as well, Clare's tenants have moved out of the flat after four years when she was getting £850 clear, now she can not even get anybody at £650.

So if you agree with me, then turn your heating upto max and drive lots more miles, and of course pass this onto all your friends on FB.

I like your thinking Tut. As an employee of the oil industry it is my duty to burn as much fuel as possible. ;)

If the Chancellor helps out I'll happily burn more. But not until.

Evora S - 2014 with Komotec 430 upgrade and 2ubular exhaust.

If I am driving carefully on the dualcarriageway - cruise control set at circa 65mph - I can get a repeatable >31mpg.
If I am out for a B road blast I will regularly get circa 12-15mpg
When its been on track I have seen less than 10mpg.

Dependent upon all the right conditions and the way its being driven I guess.

If my man maths is correct a 3mpg rise in fuel consumption justifies me getting a Komotec kit and exhaust.

Yup - thats works.
Of course the only time I managed >31mpg was on the way back from Hangar111 after getting the 430 kit fitted...... but that counts. I was tired, it was a long drive and I had no desire to drive quickly.
However, the benefits of the 430 kit are plain for all to see. Ask Craig Mc - he has recently driven the car and desrcibed it as "epic" and "completely nuts" 8)
