I'd agree with that.

I regularly drive various hire cars up and down the A90 and set cruise (where fitted) at 76 on my phone sat nav and have no issues with the cameras.

Gets frustrating when someone who has just overtaken you slams on the anchors down to 65 when spotting the gatsos :protest

I see similar on the 50mph average speed cameras on the M74, it's unbelievable that people don't grasp the concept of average speed - tearing along and braking for the gantries   :blackeye

Got Me

Post by istoo » Fri Mar 18, 2016 6:42 am

Echoing all the above, I got caught in the A96 past Harlaw dairies at 0100 had been a long day, zero traffic on an open section of road at 0100. 88 in a 60, I got 3 points and a £60 fine.

But tuts comment on the speed bands is a good basis, beig self employed if I get a ban I can't work, so I keep it under 95. If the road/ traffic ever allow it .

I did get pulled, or rather baited a few years ago when I had my urS4, dark blue BMW sat about 100m off my right hand side and would overtake, yoyoing for mile after mile, just one occupant, did that for Inverurie to near Blackburn. So opened it up off the roundabout then slowed at exactly 70, gapped him a bit, then did the same at the next roundabout before coming up to tyre bagger. Gapped it again. This time it went roaring past as I never once went over 70, pulled in front of me then put on flashers. One guy, he was visibly livid and I was very keen to see why I was pulled. I was lucky and had a warning, where as in my eyes he was baiting me to boot it. Which I did, all within the national limit.

Lot of typing, waiting for flights so thought I would download as well. But in summary, I have only been caught once, 10 years ago now, But i was almost disappointed with myself when i was caught on the law of averages I drive very sedate 99% of the time. You are as tut says in the mystical zone, circumstances, rod conditions, weather, traffic have a slant but so does your attitude to it all.

Since we are downloading and sharing.

I have 3 NIPs of shame.

First during Snowman Rally. In Lisa's most excellent MY99 Impreza Wagon. Old style mobile roadside camera on a rickety tripod, A9 somewhere around Tore (NIP quoted some utterly unidentifiable random place but hey ho). Traffic was a bit of a 50mph conga but I passed a few dodderers and needed 70-ish to do it safely (sic). Not hard to reach in a 1.3 tonne 215bhp rally weapon. Something like 72 in a 60 IIRC.

Second just after refurbing the head on the Elise. Heading over to KH to spectate at a track night, joined the M9 at J4 as per usual but kept the foot in thanks to lovely new revvability of the head :-) Scamera van on the Polmont flyover, just out of view of the sliproad exit. 82 in a 70. Harsh but eet ees thee lawwww I suppose. Pics were excellent btw.

Third in our MINI Clubman. Late for a golf match in Carnoustie. Scamera van, again strategically placed just around a bend near Longforgan on the A90. 82 in a 70. There is a pattern emerging.

In all cases, bone dry, excellent conditions, full visibility etc etc. It's a wonder I never saw any of the vans eh ;-)

Interestingly, I've never been pulled in on account of speed. Always done via automated revenue generation mechanisms. Although have had my share of polite conversations, usually as a result of driving at daft o'clock in Edinburgh area.

Why do you say it's unbelievable?

You have witnessed it often enough to know it's true.

Most people cannot add up - so why would you expect them to be able to compute the weighted average of the speed travelled over various segments of their journey between two points (whilst checking Facebook, obvz)? I would bet that only 10% of the population could compute that with confidence.

The cost of being caught is high. So for the 90% who cannot be sure, why wouldn't you expect them to reduce speed to significantly below target in the final segment to compensate for any accidental speeding (including speeding you weren't aware of because you were checking Facebook).

The psychology, maths & observed evidence all point the same way.

So I would argue it is totally believable and an inevitable result of a stupid scheme dreamt up by some control freak (no doubt in the 10% that can do sums).

Also, for the 10% that can compute the weighted average, they are also able to work out that you cannot be caught if the first camera didn't see you - so you can tear along at any speed you like until the next gantry - hence speeding along and then slamming on the brakes at the first measurement point.

My favourite is to weave between the lanes, hide up the bumper of lorries, etc.

As for Gatsos the same is true - why travel at an average speed of 76 when you can do 90 with short bursts of 65?

Cheers,
Robin

Zapped 3 or 4 times but never heard anything in the post. One would have been a ban for sure if they weren't on tea break!

Pulled over 3 times for polite conversations about speed. No actions taken. The last one was in the Mini JCW, pulled by proper traffic police. I'd love to see the in-car vid as they tried to catch me, because I wasn't hanging about, so they must have been propery "on it" with the rate they reeled me in!! Blues on, pulled over and they started with the license check, called in the plate etc and then noted I'd had the bike category added to my license the previous month. They were a couple of bikers too, and all chat immediately turned into a blether about bikes, advice on safe riding, get your advanced training done etc. I never actually got any sort of telling off or a warning at all for the speed! :D

In my experience, far less stressy after a full-on trip offshore, or knowing you have 200hrs work in the two weeks ahead of you...

Just to point out that if you do see the low life twats sitting drinking their coffee and watching porn on their mobiles as nobody would employ them for a proper job, it is too late, they have already got you as soon as your nose came around the corner. In fact it is the safest time to put your foot down rather than brake and go past them flat out as you give them the finger if you have the nerve, as your speed has already been recorded. Then comes the numberplate, and finally the face.

I hit a period a few years ago that after a day at KH I would get tired driving home on the A90 at a steady 75, nearly killed myself once falling asleep, so would take my plate off and spurt up to 100 now and again. No problem with Gatsos just the Vans. You can be pretty sure of where they will not be if you concentrate, nearly always two thirds down a longish straight after a left hand corner. Got stopped a couple of times in Aberdeen but used the "it must have come off in the car park Officer" and was just warned to get it fitted before they saw me again.

No problem now of course as I always strictly obey the law if there is any chance of being seen.

Probably Don, just a personal thing and nothing to do with my ban which was a Patrol Car, but most of them have nothing to do with safety they are pure revenue earners parked where they are most likely to catch drivers out.

I can guarantee that if I drive to Aberdeen from home, there will be one sitting at the top of the hill at the end of one of the overtaking lane sections. What has that got to do with safety? They are sitting there because cars will overtake which is what the lane is there for, try and get past as quickly as possible, probably go a few mph over the limit because they are concentrating on their driving, and get clocked by a robot camera. If they actually did anything hands on I would be kinder to them, but as you say everybody has a job to do so I should not be so harsh.

Maybe the Council should switch jobs around on a six monthly basis and they could swap with the sewage cleaners, that would make me happier.

Tut,

I have to agree with you here. Another good example being that my mountain bike got stolen last Friday from my lock up outside my flat. I'm still waiting for them to come to my house to take the details of the bike and show them the pics.

I'm sure a stolen mountain is not top of there to do list. As you say catching speeding drivers generates revenue. Recovering stolen bikes does not.

Good luck Danny, My daughter's boyfriend got two expensive bikes stolen from their flat down at the beach. Police turned up 8 weeks later to investigate. Fubar were more help, but didn't get them back.
