After many years of organising the track days, we found that the sweet spot between number of participants and keeping queuing to a minimum at Knockhill is around 50 cars. If you get above 55 towards 60, then you start getting queues building up, particularly after a red flag, and people don't like waiting for more than a lap or two to get on track. With 50 cars, there are typically between about 15 - 20 on track at any one time, sometimes a few more, sometimes hardly anyone. With closer to 60 cars, the track is never quiet, and as well as queing to get on, some drivers mention not being able to get clean laps and getting stuck in groups of cars lapping at the same speed. We could keep the numbers lower to say 40 cars, but then people who have to pay about 20% more to take part which makes it less affordable and some people may have to think twice about taking part.

At the longer UK tracks, some track day organisers have 100+ cars taking part, but on an all day session drivers also tend to be more relaxed about taking longer breaks. This also helps them keep the costs low for participants.

I assume it is okay to come along and spectate mainly to see how the day is etc. with a view to taking part in future. Only ever once tracked my car and that was back in Porker days yonks ago so consider myself a newbie although I have marshalled there for almost 40 years.

My youngest (28!) has just bought himself an 2nd hand Elise s3 - must be in the family blood (it won't be ready by then tho') and is also keen to get a ride in a couple of cars and if so what is the protocol to arrange that? Do we have to sign on or pay anything - in addition to badgering some folk to allow us to join them of course. I have a helmet but he doesn't.

Always a brilliant and welcoming setting for spectating, Al, at John's SIDC days. Pax rides generally on offer for free from a really wide range of regulars and I think pax sign-on is open for the first couple of hours of the day at least. Lids are available for a modest rental.

John Stewart will I'm sure confirm here shortly. You'll both enjoy the experience I'm sure.

Was really impressed at the last one at how many of us rocked up with the nippers in tow. There is a play park at KH which amuses the little uns and you can watch from race control if it is too noisey for them.

As above introduce yourself and you'll be in the passenger seat in no time, very little formalities.
