It looks like there might be some slight cracks appearing already Tut. Paint will provide protection so a cheaper option than having to make repairs if the cracking progresses.

They are called Perpend Vents, and are on timber frame constructions as shown in your pic when top and bottom to ventilate the timber so that it doesnt rot. However they can be used at low level on a traditional built brick and block wall as tut said as weep vents to allow moisture out of the bottom of the cavity and at sills. :thumbsup

Tut if you paint the wall then beware of the paint you use as you may end up trapping dampness in the wall as the paint prevents it escaping. If it then freezes the brick can spall

Was planning to use Dulux Weatherseal Smooth Stephen if we have it done, it seems to be the recommended one.

Also see what the painter would suggest.

I am about to strip the paint off my house as it continually flakes and needs re done (cost). Also as above it actually damages the stone by preventing it breathing

Paint won't effect the render or the block behind it if it's been done properly. Looks like it been rendered with snowcrete, and I'm more or less positive the cement should have a water proofing additive mixed through it. If water was to penetrate the paint, it's more and likely going to push the paint off.

To me the cracking looks like it's due to the cement drying out to quick when it was applied. Run a coin lightly against the render to check for it going boss, as it'll sound hollow in behind the cement.

I would leave it unless there is a problem. If it's not painted you are not on the treadmill of having to constantly repaint.

I'm with him on this...you'll be painting it every other year. You'll be doing for aesthetic reasons only. If it's not broke and you know the rest. :D
