After nearly 3 years of ownership and almost 30K miles in my 1st Lotus - S2 K Series, I decided it was time to retire the almost 17 year old lady and replace her with something somewhat younger. Whilst 17 years of age may be regarded as the perfect age for some things, in car terms she was behaving like a 67 year old. She has been perfectly kind to me during my time of ownership and not once did this dear old lady leave me stranded nor did she stand me up. I didn't fall out of love with her, I simply just fell in love something younger and more attractive. The journey with her was so good that it inspired me to stick with the Lotus brand. Retiring this old lady and replacing her was something I had planned for the future but not quite as quick as it has just happened.
So,
During a recent trip to the big smoke that is Edinburgh, I had agreed beforehand with the missus to give up two hours of my life trailing round the aisles of Ikea in return for a quick 15 minute stop at Murrays on route to check out the latest talent. This 15 minute agreement quickly turned to 2 hours on arrival. Straightaway on arrival, I fell quickly in love with a beautiful 220 Cup in solid yellow fitted with a 2bular exhaust. Not sure if the previous owner is a member or not but I know he lives local to me as had seen the car a couple of times prior. I've kept my eye on the forum and watched many a nice Cups being purchased and knew I would have one, one day.
A quick discussion with Ian and a deal was swiftly done. Ian agreed to take care of my old lady, in an as described, unseen condition. So this week I drove her down to Murrays. As always she got me there in one piece and didn't skip a beat. Ian and his team were exceptional throughout the whole buying process. After a quick inspection by Ian and his team there was no reluctance whatsoever to stick to the figures as agreed prior to seeing the car in the flesh. Must admit here, a few sleepless nights were had worrying they would try and knock down the price they had offered me for her. Big thanks to Ian and his team here for this.
Anyway, after all paperwork, Insurance, tax, plate transfers etc. It was time to enter 220 Cup ownership. I set off from Murrays and headed casually back to Inverurie. The drive home was somewhat annoying with the huge police presence all along the A90. All the way home, as always, I observed the law of the road. Passing over 7 camera vans and the numerous fixed cameras encouraged me to do so lol. Until..... Until I had the a full set of blues in my rear view just after Brechin. I immediately thought oh sh*t, was I speeding, am I insured, do I have road tax etc. etc., A quick 2 minutes in the back of the Volvo and they were quick to point out I had no insurance, no tax, and oh are you the owner? I thought phew, easy questions. I had made a point of getting all things required sent by email prior to leaving Murrays and even got Ian to print of hard copies just in case. Police were happy and complimented the car and even wished me a safe onward journey home.
The car itself has been absolutely fantastic to drive so far and the sound of the 2bular just makes it soooo much better. Can't wait for some decent weather so I can get a proper test drive. No mods planned except for a soft top for the summer and maybe some saltire flags for the wing tips. Will be asking some other Cup owners for help with this one.
Can't wait for the summer to get a few runs and meets again. Will most likely see a few of you at the Fennel breakfast and SIDC days.
Again, huge thanks to Murrays for making this happen for me, especially Ian.
A few pics of the old lady and her much younger replacement.
