Roof boxes
Roof boxes
I need to bite the bullet and face up to the fact that for this years jolly to the Cote D'azur I need a roof box.
I know they are the normally reserve of the sandal and sock, bumbag wearing Belgians at the autoroute petrol stations but we will need the extra space.
Has anyone got any tips/ words of wisdom/ one I can rent rather than forking out a fortune for one that I will probably use once before buying a bigger car? The roof bars are a similarly ludicrously-priced item that I will also need.

Re: Roof boxes
Try and get the bars second hand. That or if you buy them you'll get good money for them after. IMO you will always wished you bought a bigger box, so think carefully before choosing. I think Sanjoy has some varied experience buying second hand.
EDIT: actually was thinking about upping the size of ours so will check with the boss and see if we might sell it. What car is it?

Re: Roof boxes
I have a large roof box you or anyone can borrow. It's not new or fancy, but it is big.

Re: Roof boxes
Thanks for the advice Ferg. It is for a Merc CLS Shooting Brake, it was very full last year with one baby, so this year is going to mean roofbox-gate is inevitable.

Re: Roof boxes
It would be cheaper and make more sense to take less with you and buy anything you need when in resortjj wrote:I need to bite the bullet and face up to the fact that for this years jolly to the Cote D'azur I need a roof box.

Re: Roof boxes
Don't listen to them. Get a box and then no "discussions" about what you can take or bring back.
I assume this is the look you are going for?

60-75kg depending on loading of the bars/box is a shed load of luggage. We kept 4 bags in our box and the boot was reserved for cases of wine and small persons bikes that never go used.
Gumtree is an awesome source for boxes. Else the links above, hiring is an option if a one off. Also consider what else you might put up there as narrow boxes permit a bike rack too and less having no to reach across the roof of the car.
Last month I bought a Thule Evolution 900. Its big, really big and exactly what I was looking for. Took a week or two of a guntree search running.

Previously I had borrowed Mikes half width Halford one which was probably ample and was very shiny (funny that). I didn't see any difference between it and the Thule other than the RRPs and design.
Also consider your bars, the wing bars and the rubber strips in the bars make a big difference to the noise.
