I've got a 420d as a courtesy car at the moment as the i3 is in for it's first service. it feels sluggish and the noise from the engine is horrid.

Is there such a thing as a production 4 cylinder diesel engine which sounds good?

All down to the exhaust and induction is it not. Not really cyls.

Not really, no. And 4 is the worst

Flat 4 Impreza = lovely burbly

Elise with a Larini or 2bular = way better than std

Evora with std exhaust = bit tame

Evora with Stage 1 + decat = sublime

Plenty fruity 4 pot petrols, and I've heard 5, 6, 8, 12 and 16 cylinder diesels which have character, but not 4

Some of the Honda 4 bangers sounded good, specifically the integra. A high reving 4 pot can sound good with decent exhaust yes but they sound sh*t at low rpm. I’m a sucker for straight 6 tho the old Jags BMW before they bolted turbos on and of course TVR’s. and of course a flat plane V8.

Oh. Diesel? They all sound sh*t it’s the devils juice! Although the 6 pot in the x5 sounds ok until about 3k rpm then I sounds terrible.

If there is then I haven’t heard it.

Fortunately my 25d is refined enough that I can’t really hear the engine from indside.

The wife drove it the other day so I heard it from outside for the first time in ages- I’d forgotten how terrible it sounded.

I do think the BMW 6 pot diesels sound quite nice though.

Yep - once the Sturgeon gets on the case with the ban of petrol/diesel, I reckon I will have to go to these types of companies to get the Defender converted:

I saw an electric motorbike in action today and it absolutely flies from a standing start. It is so quiet though that in real world use I would be really fearful that it’s lack of noise would be a huge disadvantage and life expectancy much reduced.
