A project car for first Elise?
Was speaking to Will Blackham about this car before he posted it up.

The paint on the doors and sills is probably the worse I've seen but could live with it for a while.
The more pressing matter is the head gasket. Spoke to Cos at sportomotive services who has looked after it for most of its life. He thinks the liners have sunk and may need a new block. Have tried to call Craig at CMC to get his thoughts and rough price for the work but he was busy. Cos mentioned £2.5k to do it. Will thinks it might not be that and doubted Cos has actually taken the head off to check.
Any thoughts guys?
Possibly a foot in the door car and enjoy getting it up to scratch? (over many years!)
Cheers

Rebuilding aK series isn't rocket science and loads of parts available. Wouldn't need a new block, worst case you might have to shim the liners to get the right height.
Certainly seems to have been looked after and good basis for a project. Cheap relatively speaking,

Will was suggesting the engine swap as well.
If I go for it I’ll put it straight in to CMC and see what the situation is and make a decision. The head has been ported and polished so would be good to see what it was like.

I reckon if you've got a straight car, get the engine sorted and enjoy it.

Hopefully get the engine sorted and let’s me drive it for a bit before anymore work.
I hope to do as much of the maintenance and refresh as I can, I love fixing things and learning so not just about keeping costs down.
Thanks for your help as well.
If you have any bits from your old S1 taking up room at yours I could maybe buy them off you?

I’ve given most of it away but happy to look again during next garage clearout
Will also keep ear out for any other bits of use for you.
Worth starting a thread in Technical forum section asking for any spare bits.
Couple of long time members running S1s who would be good to network with also. Kinger and Jam_s160 amongst others

Thanks, appreciate it!
Good idea about the thread. Might start another one to record the work, even if it’s just for me to keep a record of progress (or lack of).
Hope to get along to some meets to pick folks brains as well.

Great to see another S1 join the fold, I've been through Elise's, Exige's and Evora's and now back in an S1.(love it)
They are relatively easy to work on if your confident with spanners. I'm always pottering about on mine as I'm retired and its now more of a past time. My current task is removing the fuel tank as I want to replace my rear brake lines and fuel pump as they are both 24 years old, nothing mentioned at recent MOT about brakes but as the car is tracked a lot its more for peace of mind.
Hope to see you and the car around.

I have downloaded a pdf service manual for the S1 dated 1996. You can buy a manual from Elise-parts for 1996-2000 for £189.99, would that be worth picking up as well or are they likely to be the same thing?

I’ve been using a PDF S1 service manual and an S1 parts manual, between them they cover everything. If you PM me your email address I’ll forward copies to you.MLCELICES2! wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 10:24 amThanks, hope to see you too (so I can pick your brain about the S1)Kinger wrote:Great to see another S1 join the fold, I've been through Elise's, Exige's and Evora's and now back in an S1.(love it)
