S1 Driveshaft CV boot

Post by rossybee » Fri Aug 16, 2024 10:49 pm

Ok so first post in here, getting an S1 made it inevitable

The Sport 160 has dirtied itself at the rear side of the engine, got it up on a ramp this afternoon at a mates garage, rear undertray off and diagnosed as a split CV boot at the gearbox end of the long driveshaft which has chucked out heaps of grease.

So, question is - best place to source a new boot?

And is removing the shaft from the box a straightforward enough job? Anything unusual to be aware of?

Thanks in advance :cheers

It’s a pretty straightforward job, I’ve replaced all mine a couple of weeks back. I bought them from Elise parts as they came with correct grease and retaining clips. After removing the hub nut ( it’s really tight) in was just a case of removing the two bolts securing the top wishbone to the chassis. This allowed the hub assembly to be pulled out far enough to get dive shaft splines from the hub. After that a couple of screw drivers in the gap between the gearbox and drive shaft to prise inner shaft from gearbox. This will need a sharp pull to release as it’s held in place by a spring clip. Do not pull the driveshaft to remove or inner UJ will come apart. After shaft is out you need circlip plier to remove out UJ bearing assembly, it just taps off. That allyto to remove/ refit the boots.

Thanks for this Kinger - I had no intention of doing the job myself but I'll be able to pass this onto the guy doing the work :thumbsup

No worries about losing gearbox oil/needing topping up?

There appears to be 2 options on EP's site - a pair at £14 and also £38, both with grease and clips, both saying suitable for S1....

Which did you go for? Thanks.

What Kinger didn't mention is that they replaced the CV boot on Ferg's Sport 160 in the pitlane at Dijon last Monday! Superb team effort to get it running again. I'll let Kinger share the stories about his car..... :thumbsup

I’ll have at look when I get home tomorrow, currently on Le Shuttle. I think it was the more expensive ones.

We just made sure we did one side at a time, and if jack up enough no problem with oil leakage.

Cheers - I have the parts manual on stick and cross-referred the part number with the SKF one that EP stock, even called them to confirm it's the correct part so have ordered that, comes with the HT grease and clips so all good :thumbsup

My "man" shouldn't take long in doing the job
