Window mechanism

Post by haggis catcher » Sat Feb 03, 2007 8:25 am

Hi Guys. i seem to be having trouble with my passengers side window mechanism. The metal fitting that holds the glass has come out its runner. I have taken the window out at the moment again, and again, and again, and i seem to have run out skin on my nuckles, and losing my patience. :(

Any hints to cheer me up :D

Can you get any pics? I don't know which bit your on about. Generally working on the windows is a real PITA though and you just have to soldier on I'm afraid! :(

Hi Richard.
Its the main bar that bolts onto the three plastic glass retainers. The bar is then ment to be fitted to the main mechanism that moves up, or down.
Any how i think your correct, im just going to have to keep my cool, and get on with it. I almost got it last night, but i could not get my hands in to fit the last nut. Ahhhh What the saying!!!! Ah no electric windows mean less to go wrong!!!!!!!!! Dont bleeding think so.

You might be better off taking the whole lot out, bolt it together, then refit it as the access is bollocks. All the bolts that hold it in are behind the door card so access is much better to them than the rest.

Also worth checking that the rubber channels are still bonded to the metal channels at each end of the window, my drivers side fell into the door and rattles for ages.

Don't know if you've tried this, but a tiny wee socket handle is what's needed for the frontmost bolt of the three. Or maybe a ratchet spanner. Access via the interior door handle surround (which you pull out etc first obviously).

Agree it's fiddly. Try wearing some latex gloves to reduce the chafing! Or wrap some thin material around the exposed fibreglass edges of the door structure to protect your hands meantime.

To be fair to it, the workshop manual is fairly prescriptive and accurate in this area. I don't have mine to hand, and am dashing out, but others may be able to locate the relevant couple of pages and email them to you.

They basically explain how to unhook the latch control arm from the interior handle...fiddly, and actually done for me by Jedi Master Lawrence...but like anything once you've done one side, doing the other is a lot quicker :-)

hang in there

I managed to get it all together again, and fastened up well. This was by taking the interiour door handle of.I could not manage to get the window to move up and down smoothly, and then POP. !! the glass came out of the plastic holders. What would be the best glue to bond them back in again? Getting frustrated !!!!!!!!! :x

Tiger seal is your friend
(other adhesives are available, care should be taken when working with adhesives, always car out the work out doors usually in the rain and always use protection, sun screen with a factor 50 is usually washed off by the time you have learned this life skill)

Oops. Welcome to the land of window maintenance!

There is an official 2-part glue type that is used to rebond the windows to the mounts, although I cheated and used sikaflex and I think it's working ok at present.

However there is a first class discussion of this in the Elise FAQ. Just surf to the Windows section for more info than you'd believe possible :-)
