harness fixings for using harness and inertia belts

Post by r055 » Fri Feb 09, 2007 5:01 pm

Anyone know where I can get the 'stronger' belt fixing bolts for the harness and lap belt configuration?

I know some come with harness kits...

Sorry can't help with the bolts, all the ones I need came with the harnesses.

I don't want to hijack your thread but wonder about those with harnesses and lap belts still fitted. I know there are arguments for and against both options and don't want to rake over that again. I only have the harnesses fitted. Two reasons for not fitting both systems:-
1. Didn't have the long bolts that you are talking about.
2. I don't know where you would stick the harnesses when you are wearing the 3 pointers. Do they not just get in the way and make annoying rattling noises whilst scratching the interior?

I only have harnesses and love them, pax is a PITA though!

I don't really need them as I do FA track work but I wanted them

I would have one or the other TBH, avoids all the faff and what ifs also gets you used to them as you have no choice.

not looked or tried yet, but if i just use the harness, would that just be a straight replacement over the 3 point fixings - i.e. no special fixing bolts required?

As long as you have a harness bar then yes!

About 2-3 hours as the seats have to come out. Let me know if you need pics or are passing nearby and you can come and have a look!

Not sure what to do with the PAX TBH... :? there will be moans either way me thinks!

looking forward to being strapped to the chassis for my 30mph cruises! :?

Ross

I used this guide clicky when I did mine. It tells you everything you need to know. Make sure you get some permabond threadlock. Costs about £4 for a wee bottle - not much for your safety.

I like my harnesses (no track work) but the passenger side can be a pain. No use at all for kids, so bear that in mind. Also passengers don't seem to understand that you must tighten them as far as they will go and then a bit more
I am with Rich in that if I had both fitted I would probably end up just taking the (slightly) easier option and buckle up the 3 pointers. Kind of defeats the purpose of having the 4 pointers.
A compromise would be to leave the 3 pointer in the pax side.
One final thought and I must admit that I have not approached this subject yet but I think they should probably be disclosed as a mod for insurance purposes.

I run with both for the simple fact that although I use the car mainly for track use I do use it on the road sometimes.

For track work, harnesses are excellent and I hate driving on track without them but I find them a total pain in the arse on the road and a bit unnecessary. Hence, I run both.

The new car has harnesses fitted, but for local road driving they are too restrictive for me due to neck movement, and since the operation on my spine, I have medical exemption on wearing seat belts.

However having spent most of my life strapped into aircraft, and almost certainly having them save my life, I feel naked without one, so will use them for road runs and on the track.

I'm putting the driver's side seat belt back into Mandy's elise so that she has both - 3 point for road, Harness for track.

The pax side is getting coverted back to only the single 3 point as it's a total pain when taking out multiple pax in the elise and the caterham could do with a new harness :D

I used common-or-garden loctite threadlock. I would tell you what it is but the label has come off but it still works.
