Jamie,

Sounds good all the best I hope it goes well for you. I have lots of friends who have been IT contractors for many years and as long as you are prepared to travel there are always jobs.

Best wishes,

Ken.

go fot it :thumbsup

thought about it for years until I took the plunge about 18 months ago and haven't looked back since. Only regret is not doing it sooner.

to add to everything said already make sure you keep up with advances/technology in your field an use quiet periods to get trained on the latest stuff...or be lucky enough to get a "bleeding edge" contract where you get paid for learning it :D 8)

best of luck :D

Go for it. I've been in my current contract for just over 1 year now. Ignore the whinging staffers sitting next to you, if they don't like the fact you're earning more than them, what's stopping them ?. Probably wife, kids, mortgage etc. You're able to take the risk, they're not, so just ignore the ribbing and take advantage of your situation.

jamie, get in touch with the scottish enterprise business gateway. quite a helpful bunch. if u r under 30, they give u a grand to start the new business. and if u r under 26, its even better. they help u with the market research and lot of stuff u'll need to know.
am getting a grand from them for my venture and they r on the hunt for a place for me.

Worth it mate, and also having a chat with an accountant, so you understand what you can and can't claim for once the company is up and running.

If you are going straight in to a contract for 3 months, it sounds perfect, as i doubt most people are lucky enough to go straight in to a solid 3 months work and get 1 months pay.

Adjust your expenditure accordingly though, and start networking like mad.

Best way to think about these things though is; (if you are worried)

What is the worst thing that could happen?

As long as you can accept the comnsequences of that, then everything else is a bonus.

If you don't try it though, you may regret it.

Good luck squire

Good luck 8)

........but it's a definate D I N G to the emergency fund idea. Makes it much easier to be selective about what jobs you take on and what you ignore.

Personally i jacked in a good full time number for a 6 month contract with my current employer. Everyone said i was nuts, but i got the "whats the worst that can happen" chat from my old man and went for it. Been here 3.5 years now and been promoted 3 times.

In contrast the "safe" job no longer exists as the glasgow was closed in the summer :(

Also if you've worked with the finance industry then you're not gonna struggle in Edinburger are you ? Lucky bar-steward.
