Helmets

Post by The_Rossatron » Thu Jan 12, 2006 12:43 am

Any advice where to buy a helmet suitable for trackdays? I'd like to limit my spending to about £100 is this realistic?

Any Motorbike shop will have a decent range of helmets, I got one in Glasgow for £60. I think they ranged from about £40 - £160

There's a place in Hamilton (peacock cross) called J&S (I think) you can pick up some good ones at a reasonable price.

Cheers

Yeah thats realistic - Motorcycle News did a review of hundreds of helmets about a year ago and found that the FM W10 was one of the best under testing. Mine cost me £99 and its got the Gold Motorsport rating. Not as posey as a £399 Arai but <slightly> better value for money
There's two types of material (polycarbonates and summat else that I forget). Although there can be a huge price difference, modern technology means there's not that much to choose between them in some cases...

I got one from Hein Gericke in Queen Street, Edinburgh. They've got a pretty good selection, can't see a £20 one offering much protection. Mine is an HJC I think and cost £110. They made me try on a whole load before I found one that fitted :thumbsup

There is a motorcycle shop in Rutherglen, one on Great western Road, one in shawlands and one in port dundas. I get mixed up withthe names as to which is which but if you need i can give you directions.
The other alternative is wait for the bike show and get one then there tend to be lots of deals to be had there.
For car use I wouldn't get a really expensive one - you are in a car after all which offers a lot more protection than you get on a bike, also a lot of bike helmets are sold on the strength of their ventilation ablilties to keep the visor clear which again is not such a factor in a car as you have a completely different air flow.

A wee tip is to put your thumb nail between the helmet and the visor when you close it so that it is not completely chut which should keep the visor clear .

Whatever you get make sure it is certified type A though. If you get a type B you may have issues re getting on track, although this may be for bikes only - check.

Happy headbanging.
