Internet Speed
Tut,
50ms to BBC is average.
If you're concerned about download speeds try downloading from:
http://gentoo.virginmedia.com/releases/ ... nt/stages/
Right mouse button on the first item (stage1-babble-babble) and do "Save Target As...". Take a look at the indicated download speed. For a 1mbit/s line you're looking for around 120Kbyte/s. For a 2mbit/s line you're looking for around 240kbyte/s. Etc.
When my 8mbit line was first enabled I was getting around 4mbit/s (i.e. around 500kbyte/s) but in recent months it has got quite a bit slower and now I am lucky to see 2mbit/s worth.
I think most of the ISPs have been implementing traffic shaping to throttle back the rate you get - so called "unlimited" might be unlimited total download per month, but apparently they achieve this by limiting your bit rate instead
[P.S. my actual link is reliably linked at 7616/448 kbit/s so not a physical problem.
[P.P.S. running some automated updates on the server this morning I notice that it is now fetching packages at 500kbyte/s = 4mbit/s again so happy camper]
Cheers,
Robin
