Decat....

Post by Rich H » Sun Apr 01, 2007 6:13 pm

Well I finally got fed up of being deafened and took out the de-cat today. Now it's back to LOUD instead of FECKING MAHOOSIVELY LOUD and alot more pleasant to drive on long trips. The CR box has rendered it hugely annoying.

Been for a blat to get the g/f a new set of boots from Ambleside in the Lake district and suffice to say the cat will be staying now...

There is however one small problem. when I checked it there was a chunk of the ceramic matrix stuff loose, so in true SE style I poked it with a screw driver and it fell out. Along with a shed load more... Is this bad? The cat material was about 6" deep in total inside the cat. I now have about half that left in the cat. I suspect my next MOT might be a little tricky to pass... (50p for scale!)

So if anyone wants a decat pipe in titanium it's yours for the special SE price of £25 plus postage. It is extremely light weight, I though the package was empty when it turned up :roll

dunnoe... think I'll keep the cat in. Had my BRM de-catted and it was loud despite all the Rover sound deadening.. Might be a bit too much for my ears in the 'Liz (although, I do have some plugs for the lugs)

They work best at 3000 degrees or something, so doubt they'd catch fire unless you were pumping a whole lot of fuel in there ... Oh, you might!! ;)

Probably sold the De-cat :D

I'm more concerned about my cat falling to bits before it catches fire! The cat won't burn ed, there is nothing in there to burn, and even if it did it's in the exhaust which gets flipping hot anyway, what difference would it make?

Still get pops now and then which will probably shatter the rest of the cat material in short order...

When the cat breaks up like that it usually chokes the exhaust and the car loses lot of power, some of the bits will turn sideways just like a bannana up your pipe :)

What are the chances of the rest following then?
Is the cat common to anything else? Rover or MGF perhaps?

Might knock the rest out to be sure....

It's the same as an MGF cat IIRC, have a look on ebay.

I should be the proud new owner of a titinum decat soon :D

I've been meaning to do it for a while, but with the good weather and the roof off, the car is quiet to the point of ghey with only the janspeed - even with the back window out (no jealously now S2 owners) At least the neighbours tell me they like the sound of the car.... just now

:thumbsup

You'll see what I mean about the weight of the thing. I thought I'd been sold an empty box! I have only ever had problems with fumes when the wind was blowing across the car, seems to suck fumes into the cabin. Normally no problem at all.

Your neighbors might change their mind with this fitted....

Cheers

De-cat now fitted and the car's running fine again :D

Both neighbours down the way have been out at me since - to give the :thumbsup to the new noise. The chap next door loves the 160 burble anyway, but he was more pleased with the new note than me
