Mac, I'm done with the timing kit and am going to return it to Lawrence as soon as I can organise a time.

Shug - Ross got the job of fitting the new exhaust and replacing all the old exhaust mounts and George got the job of replacing the engine mounts - so think yourself lucky :-)

It's been a great team effort - thanks to all that have helped so far - today was as productive as yesterday and the engine is now on the hoist ready to plumb in, which was my target for the day - we were done by about 4pm and that included a pub lunch (from the team budget, Andy ;-)).

I hate fitting the gearbox - that really was a barsteward and you forget how heavy they are until you're crouched over trying to force the feckin' spline into the clutch - sometimes they just slot in and other times you have to go saxondale on them - today was the latter and I was pleased to have two more pairs of hands to shove and heave stuff about ;-)

Cheers,
Robin

Update for today - the engine is in and running like a bag of spanners - the MEMS just cannot cope and the lack of an IACV doesn't help :-)

Thanks once again to Ross & George for helping us get this far today.

Tips for the day:

1) Don't mistake the live strap for the earth strap - the battery doesn't like it!
2) Don't swallow coolant when siphoning from a bucket to a bottle!
3) Don't position the axle stands under the car so closely that you cannot squeeze between them ;-)

Tomorrow evening I will return with my emerald and we'll try and get it idling and running a bit better, then it's on with the remaining body work, throttle linkage, air box and we should be ready to head off to emerald for mapping next Tuesday.

Neil has a brief video on his telephone - not sure if he can YouTube it - when you get off the idle, it ain't half loud!

Cheers,
Robin

It's alive !!! Sorry I couldn't hang on to see that.

Live strap  That would explain why it didn't fit  :D :D [/quote]

See you tomorrow for the next masterclass.

George.

Yeah, though you could hardly call fitting the battery strap to the gearbox as a masterclass, more like a cock-master-class ;-) All the signs were there: it was too long, it was the wrong bolt size and, err, it was red *sigh*.

Anyway, I am going to do some paid for work today, so won't be over until the evening - around 20:00 I guess - maybe a bit earlier if I get a move on ... AndyG may be about, though ...

Cheers,
Robin

It was good to be involved - Robin's a patient teacher, and humoured my numerous queries over which way the bolts should face, and how tight should I do them up...

A lot achieved over the weekend...

From here on Saturday:

Nice to catch up with everyone too! :D

Update on last night's progress.

George & I spotted that the IACV from the S1 would fit (we previously thought it wouldn't because we hadn't spotted the boss that bolts on to the plastic manifold), so we fitted that.

I tidied out the boot floor, got the laptop in, installed my emerald (K3 should be here this week, but I just wanted to know it was going to run better than the MEMS managed). After some pi$$ing about getting the ECU setup right (it had been configured for my S2->S1 adapter loom), it runs a treat. Once hot it manages to get the idle down to about 900 RPM though it's far from stable. Am hoping that the K3 will do even better if I can get a LC1 into it - or we'll turn off closed loop idling.

After that we decided to fit the toe links - what a total baaarrrstard they are. It's a classic doesn't-fit.com piece of kit - the brackets that go onto the hubs don't align with all three bolt holes, so you need to educate the big 10mm hole with a 10mm drill to get it to fit (only 1/10th of mm max, but even so it's annoying). Fitting the protector boots was fun - at first it looked like we had no chance, until we came up with the triple-screw-driver "violation" technique

Drilled the holes into the subframe to rivet on the heatshields - would have been easier to do with exhaust off :-(

Then refitting the nuts inside the bottom of the subframe behind the rear wishbone bush - horrible job with full hand laceration from the sharp edges of the subframe - nice!

Anyway, all done now, except the riveting as I forgot to bring over my rivet popper.

Tonight's task is to refit throttle cable, wheels, fill gearbox with some gearbox oil and then go for a run with no clam on, just for grins :-)

Then refit rear clam and seats and then the RLC will be ready for it's next mission :-

(1) Over to CLCM to get the toe reset (rear toe is to pot now) and camber measured.
(2) Trip to Dan's for safety equipment fitting.
(3) A run down to Emerald for mapping.

Then RLC will be home for an evening before heading off to go testing at O/P either Thu PM or Fri AM depending on what Andy is doing workwise.

Thanks again to George for another evening of his time - it's much appreciated!

And before I forget, thanks also to Lawrence for the loan of his hoist & Mr T chain + lifting brackets, and also thanks to Fd for the indirect loan of his cam timing gear.

SE - what a nice place to be :-)

Another epic night - and a memorable one as Robin fired her up!

I was very excited (my neighbours must be hoping we get it sorted soon!) and watching the feedback coming through on ther laptop, our Chief Engineer talked me through the settings and I stood there with a massive grin on my face!

Thanks also to George for again getting in amongst it last night, and helping with a whole manner of things. The toe-links were a pita, but we got there in the end :)

Owe a massive thanks to Robin for getting the engine sorted while i wasn't even around, and a big thanks to everyone else who stopped by to help.

The RLC is getting closer to the road now, and although there's still a lot to do and time is definately against us, fingers crossed we'll have it sorted by Oulton.

Off to buy a few more things from Geary, and then will frantically being trying to get some work done!!
