Ken,

Do you want to give me a ring, 07739 763300. I have no garage but my mate said I might be able to borrow theirs provided I move some stuff around to make room, it's in Stewarton...

I'll be up until about 1am.

Thakns very much for all the offers of help though...

Ah the best laid plans.

After realising that there was no way I could get any work done on the car on my days off, despite the generous offers of help (esp Tenkfeet who offered to do it for me!) I put it into Falkland today.

I ordered new parts yesterday from Eliseparts which arrived at Falkland this morning, a couple of hours before me. So far so good. (I'd ordered a new radiator as a precaution as well. i'd been losing coolant and couldn't find a leak but Simon and Tenkfeet's stories suggested it may be the rad).

So clam off, yes it was the radiator, but the heater blower that eliseparts had sent was for a S1. Doh!
Kevin phoned them and it turns out they don't do one for a S2 (although the one I had ordered said fits both models on the website). Doh!

Right, where else does one get Elise parts. How about MMC. "Do you have one?" I ask?
"650 quid." they say.
"It's only a <expletive> fan. Not a <expletive> engine." I reply (mainly silently in my head)..
"Hang on we'll call you back."
"Sorry our mistake, 170 +vat but we don't have any and it looks like they are on back order"

Meanwhile my car is sitting, as Kevin so eloquently put it, with it's throat cut in Glenrothes and it would seem there is nowhere to get a new blower from.
So Lee at Falkland is going to try and fix the old one. Not the end of the world if he can't as it transpired the radiator needed changed (and thus the clam had to come off anyway) but had it not it would have been a great way to waste quite a few hours labour.

Anyway thumbs up to Falkland but not as impressed with Eliseparts (who are normaly pretty good).

The early S2s have the same blower fan as S1s so not entirely Eliseparts' fault. Lotus changed the heater system in 2003.

There is most likely nothing wrong with the fan motor itself and it will just be down to corroded contacts on the resistor pack bolted to the bottom of the fan unit. Both the blower fan unit and resistor pack have been on back order at Lotus for some months now.

Dan does that mean you can repair the fan blower unit or do you need a new one. I ask this as mine is gone as well? I have a 2004 S2 Exige.

Thanks,

Ken.

Cheers Dan that is fantastically re-assuring as it is exactly what they found and described and have decided to do.
Always good to get confirmation from an extra source.

It also explains why Yvo sells this

You can just replace the resistor pack (if you can get one, as I said they have been on back order for months) but if you put it in the same place it will just happen again. The solution is to move the resistors to somewhere dry.

Pleased you're getting it sorted Pete. Was going to reply to your PM (had been away for a couple of days) but noticed you'd booked it in to Falkland. I wouldn't really be able to help you for at least a couple of weeks anyway unfortunately.

'tis true. Although you do get a roof that works. And a boot you can expect to be able to open. And an expectation that things left in the boot will stay dry.

And I think because of this, because the S2 pretty much works straight out of the box as it were, that you don't get locked into that constant upgrade loop that is te curse of many S1 owners. Because there are so many things they have to fix it seems to be an easier step for them to becoming obsessed with increasing the power, possibly instead of just concentrating on increasing their skill.
