Are the pads held in place by pins?

Paul, i recently saw a similar problem where the pad was moving about in the caliper and making a clunking noise, caused by a small high spot on the disk. If the noise goes away with the application of the brakes, i'd suspect the same.

I'd try fitting anti-rattle pads to the contact points between the pad and caliper. :thumbsup

... and I never thanked you for your assistance in sorting it. :thumbsup

I have also sorted the 'chirp' that was annoying me and was present on all of the Elises I have owned too, a small piece of rubber hose wrapped around the handbrake cable at each side where it passes through the metal 'hanger' which holds it in place -easy fix and all rattles sorted :thumbsup although it is a Lotus so I'm sure another one will be along soon

I seem to be the only one that noticed you mentioned it's when you brake - therefore I doubt it would be the pads ratteling as that usually goes away when your brake!

Are you sure it's nothing to do with anything behind the caliper hitting off the wishbone etc and not the caliper itself? i.e. stainless brake lines. They would move and possibly hit something when you brake - maybe tie them back loosly.
