well to express the poorness of the justice system I will tell you how to get off paying any fine.
  1. don't pay fine
  2. warrent get's issued for your arrest
  3. hand yourself in to the police on a thursday night
  4. next morning you will be up in court for non payment
  5. plead guilty
  6. your sentence will be halved from 7 days to 3 days
  7. but that means you get out on a sunday
  8. they don't let people out on a sunday
  9. so you walk free from court having done your time (thursday night)
  10. this also has the added bonus of a free education in criminality from fellow cons
Isn't Britain great!

Also if you want to shoplift (wait till the christmas crackdown is over) you have to get caught and cautioned 30 times before you goto court and get fined :D

tell the judge that you drive a lotus normally and as the car you where driving was quieter and didn't give the same sensation of speed that you are used to you crept up, you understand that your speed was excessive and normally you wouldn't do that etc etc. ;)

I was caught on camera on the A9 about 7 years ago, doing 91 in what was supposedly a 60. I checked similar offences in the papers etc. at the time and most just received 3 points and sub £100 fines. Case went to court, pleaded guilty by letter thinking it wasn't that serious an offence and received 4 points and a £300 fine

Unfortunately, I think the outcome depends on the court and how strongly they feel about speeding offences. I was told afterwards that due to a few recent fatalities on the A9, they were clamping down on speeding in that area at the time.

So based on todays sensational press and government 'speed kills' campaigns, I'd dig out the KY jelly

While I might have posted about my thoughts on speeding in 30mph areas I do agree that the Justice system is pretty crazy when it comes to the punishment for speeding offences listed above. Personally I can think of many other crimes which I feel are more serious and/or anti social and these often attract minor fines which are no real deterant.
Unfortunately I suspect it is a sign, not of some creeping anti car mentality, but simply of chasing targets. Speeders are generally, although not exclusively PAYE and generally law abiding. Easy to catch, easy to find , easy to fine or easy to punish. It is one of the few crimes, along with certain drug offences, that I can think of where you are solely punished for breaking the law.
Not for the impact of your crimes on society.
Not for the impact of your crimes on the victim,
Not for the impact of the crime on yourself.

If the sole purpose of a law is for people to break it then the law is at fault and should be changed or society loses respect for law, and by association law enforcement and law makers.

A couple of years ago I got caught doing 92 in a 50 (M80 stepps by-pass). I got 4 points and a £250 fine. I thought I got off quite lightly really. For me the whole experience was a bigger deterent than the points or fine. First I plead guilty by letter, but despite replying in plenty of time my letter was never passed on to the court so an warrant was issued for my arrest for non-appearance. I had no idea until I called the court to ask what the outcome was because I hadn't heard anything. I went straight round to the police station to "hand myself in". they were very nice about it. When it eventually wnet to court I was found guilty, but sentencing was postponed and I had to actually go to court for sentencing. I must have looked very out of place in my suit because when I walked in the guys at the door asked if I was the new fiscal. sitting waiting to actually appear in court was an unpleasant experience, I had to sit in a smelly cell with a bunch of complete neds who seemed to be old hands at the game. Not knowing any better I was expecting to receive a ban.It was a relief to get off so lightly. I do think looking smart helped to give the impression that I was a respectable otherwise upstanding member of the public, and probably helped keep the punishment down.

Or maybe the opposite - if you had shown up in a shell suit with a couple of bucky stains on it perhaps you would have got the usual 20 quid fine (which you don't pay), don't do it again sentence ...

Cheers,
Robin

I was told from my incident a good few years ago when I was on 6 points and up at Perth court for doing 89.5 on the A9 not to drive on the day of the case. I didn't attend in person - got Lawyer to write and plead guilty by letter - but was told beforehand a court case meant I would get between 4 - 6 points and a fine.
If you are on 6 points already and they decide to hit you with another 6, you are banned as soon as the hammer falls. Would be harsh and unlikely if stopped driving later that day, but effectively you could then be done for driving whilst banned :!:
Likewise if attending the court - take someone with you in case needed to drive home.
Doubt you'll get 6 points though. I ended up with 4 and a £250 fine  and my guess is you will get something similar.

Currently on 6 points & i have got 3 points on my Northern Ireland Counter part (Separate piece of paper)
they are getting ready for xmas, males are the target.i think you're screwed. expect to be made an example of and lose your licence or get max points,

know someone who has 6 points still on licence from 20 years ago, didn't bother to send away and get licence cleaned, refered to court like you and got 6 points for 43 in a 40.

Cracking Story here - nothing to do with speeding tho - but it's my thread, so it's allowed !
Back in 1990, i knew a "Dodgey Car Dealer" from Motherwell.
The bloke was standing in front of the judge - up for driving a car with no road tax.
Because he pled poverty & was "on the dole". He got fined £40 & had to pay it back at £1 per week........
Ironic thing was, here was wearing a "ski jacket" with £15,000 in cash in his pockets. - He was just about to leave the court building & go to the auction to buy some cars !!

If you build up 12 or more penalty points within a period of three years, you’ll be liable to be disqualified under the 'totting-up' system.

So can't see how points from 20 years ago would have any effect. :?

Yeah, but the Northern Ireland Points don't count towards the Great Britain licence.
I know NI is part of the UK.
But the laws are different.

That seems a bit harsh - didnt think you'd get a ban for 90

Jools Townsend, of road safety campaigners Brake said Hughes' offence was "shocking" and called the sentence lenient.

"By committing this deadly crime, Hughes undermines the work of traffic police to protect the safety of road users, both within his force and across the country.
