Re: £20k Supercars
348 said not to be a good fezza... Almost bought one instead of my V8 esprit but put off by service costs and reports of poor handling, one of the ones I looked at was rusting tooroadboy wrote:I was mate. Change of circumstances prevented that.
Just as well though really as I am now of the opinion it would have been a very bad idea. Spent a good bit of time with one and apart from the engine they're pretty uninspiring and feel surprisingly cheap in the build quality department. Too much Ford switch gear etc.
Think I'd rather sink that kinda money into an old Fezza (probably 348 cos I like them) and take my chances.
Actually, these days I'm much more likely to buy an E-type or other such achingly beautiful classic. God I'm getting old!![]()

Re: £20k Supercars
Yup, well aware of the reputation of the 348 and have driven a couple. Thing is though, for me, that's not what owning a Ferrari is about. Let's face it, at that age (355 included) they all feel sh*t in the handling department compared to an Elise and they're all utterly useless on track.
For me, an old Ferrari is something for a drive out on a nice day rather than hooning about in. It's about the sense of occasion and the V8 soundtrack and the 348 is just as good at this as the rest of them. And as I said in my other post, I like them. I like the look of them. It was the V8 Ferrari when I was a young teenager and that's what it's all about.
So, I'd have a 348 thanks.

Re: £20k Supercars
I know I will never buy one as I couldn't justify spending that sort of money on a car that I hardly ever used.
I've got a mate who spent 100 grand on a Gallardo and drives it about once a month. Potters about in a Renault Kangoo day to day!

Re: £20k Supercars
I've a feeling you can't buy a £20K supercar................
At the price it has to be a classic and what was, is no longer super, as Dan says, comparing to modern 'sports' or hot hatches, classic supers aren't really very super.......special , yes
A mate drives an immaculate '88 911 Carrera Sport, at the time perhaps it was super, very expensive, definitely but by comparison to todays 911 definitely average. Is a 911 a supercar anyway, doubt it far too practical.
He's really handy with spanners and spends a fair amount of time, and money, keeping it the way he likes it. Driving experience is very mediocre and an acquired taste, which I think may be similar for many classics.
Perhaps you can buy an interesting classic for £20K but not for me.

The special/classic thing also hits a snag - is a Lambo Miura a supercar or a classic? A McLaren F1, or an XJ220?
I am beginning to convince mysel' that I consider anything to be a supercar that was so named in its prime. That means a 911 probably was, even a 964 and earlier.
Dan, I know what you mean about a 348. It was the modern testarossa for me as a young 'un - I think the only car I liked more (bar the F40 of course) was the F512M - looking at that nowadays makes me wonder what I was smoking at the time!
Back to the classic/supercar debate - the F40/Porsche 959/XJ220 really do impress me more than ever in that they're as quick, if not quicker than some of the modern offerings. Quite something after 20 years.

I think it is extremely cool though driving something cheap and modest day to day when you have a supercar in the garage.roadboy wrote:I've got a mate who spent 100 grand on a Gallardo and drives it about once a month. Potters about in a Renault Kangoo day to day!
On the 348, Jonathon Neal once took me round Knockhill in his. Looks gorgeous and lovely sound but apart from that really pretty unimpressive, and the airbagged steering wheel is truly hideous. By contrast pax laps in his Caterham HPC were awesome.
Re: £20k Supercars
This is the way I think. I also like to think that there is another classification for even more special cars (super super car/hyper cars?) that would include everything that essentially is very very special.GregR wrote:The special/classic thing also hits a snag - is a Lambo Miura a supercar or a classic? This thread is essentially about cheap supercars.
In my world of definitions, a cheap 'hyper car' would never exist. Maybe part of the definition is that they doesn't really loose much value.
So, personally i'd have to say:
Supercars:
Any and all 911,NSX, 308/328 GTB/S, 348, even the Ferrari 400, Maserati 3200, Ghibli etc...
Hypercars:
Zonda, Enzo, 288 GTO, F40 & 50, Porsche 959, Miura, XJ220 etc...
There are some odd 'genre crossing' cars though, that maybe should be super based on performance...
It's that pesky VW Phaeton W12 again.

Whereas to me, there are just cars....
Good cars and bad cars for a variety of reasons, but I've never been a fan of the obsession everyone has with putting things in a bracket.
