Yeh I did Plymouth to Santatnder a few years ago on the bike and that was about £500 if I remember correctly. Not cheap but much easier.Scotty C wrote:i just had a look at the portsmouth to bilbao ferry. £800 return

The Geordie express is a good relaxing option as I too hate driving through the UK. More so on the way back. It does extend the trip by a day on the way back but that's not too bad I suppose. The good thing about the Newcastle ferry is the daily sailing whereas Rosyth was every second day wich was a pita.
Anyway I'm not going so probably not allowed to contribute.

LOL
If people were SERIOUSLY interested in team transport, I know a friendly HGV driver who could probably rustle up a tractor unit to tow Sanjoy's option #2. HOWEVER he would need paying, and when all is said and done I think there is still fun to be had on the journey outward (at least, if not so much on the drudge homeward).
Now, were I going, then for those bored with the slog through the UK, you can make it more fun by following the spine of England as far as central Yorkshire, although after that it has to be M-something then the London disasterzone whatever way you play it.
You might need an extra day tacked on to make it work but it could be worth it - DDtB take note, get in touch if you want routes.
I myself would not rule out acting as Transporter for someone who couldn't be ar$ed driving their car all the way there / back, and flying back then out again to reverse the route etc. It's unlikely that I could commit the funds to run the whole trip, or I'd be pitching in as someone's co-driver right now!
But all that said, in the spirit of the Stelvios and Ring trip I've done, you should treat the legs there and back as part of the fun. At the very worst, if a long hack through UK in one day gets you down, then book a stopover part way down or at the port itself. And Robin's point about driving neath the moon and stars is very poignant. Fecker if it's foggy right enough

True enough ... I would hope the 170 tuts would be reserved for carefully selected sections of road at appropriate times; OTOH as soon as you show up at Dover with 5 Lotus-type cars on the back of the truck it'll be "license, registration and insurance please, sir!".
