Why don't I like Honda K20's

It matters because the Hondistas have been preaching that the difference is just 15 kg and that is just not true


it matters because the weight does make a difference to the handling - that's why Honda cars require higher rate rear damper springs


it matters because the ESSENCE of Lotus and Colin Chapman's whole philosophy is light weight above all else, and he would not like the Honda conversion.


it matters because a lot of people believe it matters and understand why


but most of all it matters to me because 15kg is a complete fabrication which has been used to help justify the Honda conversion.

I agree that it is more than 15kg, at least with my car. Reckon more like 30kg, ie:- the original N3 TUT would probably have been around 735kgs, and I doubt that you would get it less than that with a bog standard Jan '77 car, which mine was.

A NA Honda engine install with full SS exhgaust is about 45oddkg heavier than a stok Rover engine install with ss exhaust


a NA Honda k20a2 install with exhaust is about 60kg heavier than a KingK engine + PG1 install and ss exhaust.

As I read this a Honda K is heavier than a rover K, everyone agree's conversions seem to save some weight which offsets the corner weights a bit.

Tut has a Honda with lots of power, you have built rover K powered cars with lots of power. They both have there merits I'm sure some people will prefer opne route some the other as we are all different we will never get an agreement on what is "best"

Let us leave it at that please. I enjoy the technical threads can we leave them at this is good, this is bad this is why.

Everyone makes a big thing about Chapmans performance through lightweight thing, personally I don't think he gave a sh*t about it he cared about winning races (road cars helped pay for that hobby) and having something lighter made you go faster. He was an Engineer and thought like one.

If that little weight is such an issue just never offer pax rides etc, I'm sure the average pax must be 70odd Kg? Hmmmmm that said a decent leg must be the best part of 20KG ... really does it matter that much in the grand scheme of things, not to me it doesn't otherwise I'd try and lose a few KGs lol... both have their merits and fans so who am I to tell anyone what to like or other wise?? so, I won't! I'll let folk have their opinions and leave it at that

These moans bore me, it's like a record on repeat. I absolutely love good technical discussions but the way this is going is just childish, aggressive, and trying to prompt a reaction. I dont understand why technical discussions need to come across like this. This discussion went on and on and on before and we thought it was over, let's open up another can of worms and prompt reactions with the same old sh*t. Leave this point and move onto another.

Please stop the childish reactions, it's like being in a playground. Road boy from his experience have found x and from yours is y, great finish lets move on.

If you want to continue technical discussions can we please put them across in a mature, non aggressive manner and vary the points now and again, then it may give the community something interesting to read and discuss, rather than come on argue same point for months upon end in a manner which gets people's backs up.

putting aside all the nonsense, what i still dont get(and i think i posted this months ago) is, why the k series? its not been made for years, its dead and gone(as is the K20 now). if going to the expense of a conversion now(or contemplating a uber bling, uber expensive king k engine rebuild) why not go with something modern? ive no idea what but surely there must be light weight, pokey, reliable engines that would be better for the job? eg. theres a plethora of tiny cc turbod cars and the likes these days.

as all the s1's and early k series s2's are kicking on a bit now is there really much of a market for expensive conversions/rebuilds? I know i had a brief moment when i contemplated SC'ing my honda'd car but when you do the sums it would be more cost effective to buy a much newer car with the 260 conversion.

It comes is NA or Turbo versions is totally reliable, powerful, and light no need to convert anything pick a VX220 today and we can be done with the K series Vs Honda. Astra power FTW
